Dreaming of spring on a cold night

We had some sunshine today and the temperature inched above 40 degrees.  Gavin and Patty made full use of the yard, dashing about and pretending it was warm.

2 a.m., I took the dogs for their last out of the night.  It’s getting danged cold out there.  I’m tired of the cold, of being stuck in the house, gray and dreary days.  I don’t want to wear a heavy coat, a hat, and gloves.  The dogs are tired of it too.  Both were quick going about their business.

I want warm nights where I can sit out by the pond listening to the crickets and frogs sing in chorus.  I dream of digging in the gardens, the scent of flowers, and the sound of song birds.

I can tell the dogs want spring too.  I can see the dreams of dozing in a patch of sun warmed grass in their eyes.

I heard a tiny snatch of a songbird’s song this morning.  Tulips and daffodils are pushing through the mulch.  Can spring be far behind?

  1. Ahhhhh Spring! That time of year where flowers bloom, birds sing, baby animals are born….and it rains! ‘Course last year it rained so much I wanted Summer to get here. Then Summer arrived….with MORE rain! BLECH!! I am definitely looking forward to Spring, so long as it’s not as freakin’ wet as it was last year, specially since it never felt like we had a Spring.

Shhhh, if we’re lucky we’ll have a nice Spring and not last year’s monsoon season.

  2. I hope it’s not too far off – I too heard a song bird, and my iris bed which is protected and sunny is snow free in spite of two and three foot piles of snow elsewhere. The crows that chased the fox down our sidewalk yesterday probably wouldn’t have bothered if visions of nesting time weren’t in their heads, and the geese are on the move.

We’ve had flocks and flocks of geese fly over this past week–a very good sign that Spring is on its way.
