Goliath wanted squab for dinner.

Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while know all about Goliath.  For those of you who haven’t, Goliath is one of the four bullfrogs who live in our pond.  You can tell which one he is because he makes the other three look tiny.  There are a couple of pictures of him on ‘our garden and pond’ page.

Goliath spent last summer begging worms off me.  (Actually, he stalked me for the worms that I dug up for the Koi.)  Like a fool, I spoiled him by giving them to him.  For the past week, we’ve had some nice weather but not too many insects around which means the frogs are ravenous.

I was sitting out on the back steps enjoying the birdsongs and the sounds of the fountains and waterfall.  Two mourning doves sat on a wire above the yard.  A robin was busy taking a bath in the little pool at the top of the waterfall.  When he finished the two doves flew down to stroll around the pond.  They patrolled once around, a second time, and on the third lap, I heard a loud splash.  The doves flew up from the far side of the pond both were in a panic.

Curious I walked over to the edge of the pond and there sat Goliath on top of a lily pad pot.  A couple tan tail feathers protruded from his mouth.  If ever a frog could, he had a ‘rats, foiled again’ look on his face.

  1. Been a while since I’ve been here & I see this as the first post I’ve read in a while, what a monster you’ve created in that frog! I hope you got a picture of that! 🙂

I missed you! I wish I had a picture of it but by the time I got back out there with the camera the feathers were gone and so was Goliath, he’d retreated to his cave under the waterfall.

Go check out Angie’s blog to see what she’s been up to, to support BT rescue!

  2. Hahahaha. I guess he’ll be stalking you again this year. That is, IF a bullfrog has a memory! LOL

If the Koi can remember that they eat food from my hand (they do) then I’m sure Goliath will remember where he got all those worms last year.

  3. I want a pond in the back yard with koi and everything but don’t have the strength to keep it in good order and DS won’t do it. I had to drag his butt on his computer today just to get him outside to fix the fence gate and do some weeding before the rain comes in. Gah…meanwhile I tote laundry up and down stairs (my aching back as usual) and spend entirely too much time online with my own blogs and am about to be a guest on somebody else’s blog. Yikes. And here I thought I needed a volunteer or part-time job – crap on a crutch I don’t have time to do much more than spin my wheels. BTW I love the name Goliath for your frog – it fits. Hugs! Scritch the pups for me.

We’ve had other giant bullfrogs they were named Frogadile, Frogzilla, and Oh Crap He’s a Big one. A large pond is a lot of work but G has a small one with Shibunken and gold fish in it and it’s not nearly as much work. Of course, her DH put a huge filter and pump on it and they only need to clean out the filter twice a year.

  4. No wait…that was supposed to be “drag his butt OFF his computer” oy vey

I knew what you meant–there’s your little editor.
