Web crawlers

She guards the tomatoes.  Every evening she labors.  She weaves, waits, and weaves some more.  It is miles of silk to her.  Impressive to us.  Five feet across and tall, and begins three feet above the ground.  A perfect circle.  In the morning, it’s gone.  She never leaves a strand of silk to warn others of her lair.

She’s one of many who live in the garden.  One of many different species who weave their webs each day or night.  She’s the largest.

We have water spiders who weave their webs over the pond.  Their oddly shaped webs are as strange as the spiders who weave them.  They are delicate and difficult to photograph.

Spiders, if they stay in the gardens, I’m fine with them, but come into my house and well…

  1. Have to agree. Spiders outside – doing their thing. Spiders inside – meeting a broom.

Yep, that’s what I’ve told them. Also told one to stay off my hammock, it is MINE!

  2. When I first saw this picture on my web reader, I thought the markings on the abdomen were a face, (a rather fed up face!) 🙂

She and I have an agreement she works out by the tomatoes and once or twice a night I’ll shine the flashlight on her web long enough to attract some bug juicy moths… 😉

  3. Nice! I haven’t found any impressive spiders in our garden, yet… I’m thinking of swiping one from work to bring back as guardian spider.

She is impressive. The males are much smaller. One was ‘courting’ her the other night and with spiders we all know how that goes…

  4. What a wonderful spider, and such a perfect photo. Love the garden spiders. Was out one night a few years back to watch the Percied Meteor Showers, (coming up next week) and saw one of my garden spiders removing her web. She just sucks it in. It was so amazing, like a super long strand of speghetti.

Had another spider who made a nest in the wind chimes outside my back door. She would come out if I held up a teeny piece of hamburger meat for her. She carefully took it out from between my fingers and up it went into the chime.

My Aunt B had spiders who kept webs over her farmhouse’s windows. They looked similar to this one.
