A woman’s prerogative

This what my Kindle looks like

As a woman, I have the right to change my mind.  As a writer, I owed it to myself to learn all I could about E-books and E-readers.  At least that’s what an agent told me recently.

“You should really know everything you possibly can about E-books and E-readers.  After all they aren’t going away, they are getting better.”  She said.

I whined, “But what about book signings and the feel of a real book in your hands?”

“Don’t worry there will always be real books.  However, E-books and E-readers will get your books out there to more people, younger people.”

The discussion went on for quite some time and by the end, I was still whining, but I figured that I’d better take her advice and look into the whole business.

I checked out all sorts of E-readers and then I bought a Kindle.  It arrived yesterday around noon.  I spent the rest of the day learning about it, playing with it, dressing it in a skin, and even downloaded two free books and a game.

I hate to admit it, staunch book fan that I am, but…I like it.

  1. Yeah! you will enjoy having it, and the ability to read several books at a time, while not having to lug them around. However, I found with my sony that the pleasure of lending a book has disappeared. I can no longer drag people into my living room/library and hand over an armful of books they ‘might’ like, they can no longer peruse the back cover, or skim through the pages. They have to WRITE DOWN the book recomendations then go home and download… So, it’s a change, but I agree, it’s one that will stay and the benefits do outweigh the negatives. When I travel, I always take my sony and it’s glut of books, magazines, poetry, and anything else I feel like loading. Enjoy your Kindle!

After having a couple of my favorite out of print books stolen by the people who ‘borrowed’ them, I no longer will lend my books to anyone except G. She always returns them.
As for having the Kindle filled with books–well lets just say I’m starting out slow and with freebies.

  2. I hear you. I love my books as well but I got an IPad for my birthday and it is an ereader as well as tons of other things and I love it. Books will never leave my life though.

  3. I LOVE my Kindle. I felt the same way for a long while. But it is cheaper, easier, more environmentally friendly and encourages me to read MORE books than I am used to. I also find and read books I wouldn’t normally read because my kindle recommends them to me. Isn’t it so awesome? Oh and I agree with those above, books will never go away, they are too good.

My problem is that I will often read one or two books in a day. The ease and speed with which Kindle books arrive may very well send me to the poorhouse if I’m not careful. Having to make a trip to the bookstore saved me money.

The writer in me says, “buy more books and support the writers!” The reader in me says, “ouch, careful on the budget there…”

    Hey, thanks for stopping by!
