A little corn bread maybe?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Hungry for some sort of Mexican flavored casserole (I’ll invent it) to go with corn bread.
Just dying for corn bread really. LOL
Ever have one of those cravings?
I do. Often. Usually for something sweet but this time I’m craving savory. Yes, my corn bread leans to the savory side.
What are you craving tonight?

As if we didn’t spend enough there already

G and I are in trouble.
There’s a new stand out at the farmers market.
“Here, have a sample.”
We take a sample. Looks of ecstasy cross our faces. “Ah, too delicious! We’ll stop here last, on our way out, so it stays cold.”
We skipped the Amish bakery, can’t set off my sweet tooth now I need to have some restraint.
Stopped at the gadget stand and picked up a biscuit cutter, I am tired of using a glass to cut out my biscuits–I’ve used one for 42 years.
We split a loaf of fresh sourdough bread at the artisan bakery.
G bought cabbage for halupkies (stuffed cabbage rolls) and I’ll get some!
Stopped at a favorite stand and picked up a little bulk sausage, pimento cheese, and smoked Gouda.
Another stand for smoked chicken thighs.
Finally back at the new stand, we bought our lunches of sushi and seaweed salad. Once we got back to my house, we dished out and shared our sushi choices. What a perfect and delicious lunch.

The day before he gets home
Posted by doggonedmysteries
12/2/2015 8:30 p.m. blood pressure is 116/64.
Rain all day. It rained hard enough that the dogs were not as willing to go out as they were in yesterday’s. Poor babies.
Made ham and bean soup for The Curmudgeon’s first dinner at home. One of his favorites. It’s cooled and ready for the fridge.
I used a ham hock from our farmers market. A heavily smoked, huge, ham hock that had the dogs going ape shit over the fragrance.
You all have a good one.

Best soup I ever tasted

Twenty minutes to heaven.
Even The Curmudgeon (not a big fan of soups) liked it.

What’s for dinner?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Three words I hate to hear.
Am I the only one who struggles to think of what to cook for dinners?
I always have a freezer full of meats because we order through a company called Five Star Foods and they deliver and fill our freezer every six months.
However, this does not mean I have any idea what I am going to cook each night. Often times, thanks to a microwave and its defrost capacity, I don’t know until five minutes before I start cooking what I am going to make for dinner.
Are you a menu planner or a by the seat of your pants cook like me?

If you notice, there are metal screens on top of the soil. We have a horrific overpopulation of hungry squirrels and they were digging holes in the soil.
My recycled aquarium stand potting table works well for me.

Let the grilling begin.
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I cleaned the gas grill so I can start cooking outside again. So nice to have the grill up and running.
We had lemon herb chicken breasts cooked on the grill last night. I served them over a rice, quinoa, wheat berry, and veggie salad. We also had grilled/roasted Brussel sprouts. Quite the tasty and healthy dinner.
The Curmudgeon liked it. I loved it.

It was a good night for soup.
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Since we’re getting a new order in from Five Star Home Foods soon, dinner was a ‘clean some stuff out of the freezer’ sort of meal. Only this time I turned the stuff into a soup. I cleared out frozen veggies and chicken breasts.
I made a chicken tortellini soup. I used half a bag of sliced carrots, 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts cubed, a half bag of mixed soup veggies, half a bag of kale, chopped fresh onion and celery, some dried basil and oregano, turmeric, sea salt, pepper, frozen tortellini, and chicken broth.
It turned out quite tasty.
No, I didn’t give you any measurements because I didn’t measure.
You all have a good one!

What to order?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
It’s true I have often complained of having to go grocery shopping. I can’t help it, even with my scanty lists I still hate going.
One thing that helps me not have to go grocery shopping as often is that we have our meats supplied by a food service company. They take our order every six months and then deliver and load the order in our freezer.
We’ve used them for years and love them. They have come in very handy as The Curmudgeon’s health gets worse.
He also enjoys that he gets to help choose the meats and other frozen items he’d like us to have over the next six months. He used to do most of our grocery shopping when he was able to.
Anyway, why did I bring that up? Because I am in the process of working out our order for when our salesman arrives on Tuesday.

How long can I avoid going to stores?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I meant to snap a few pictures of my now naked trees but didn’t seem to get around to it yesterday. Instead, I went grocery shopping, a chore I hate all the way into my marrow.
As usual, I parked away from all the other cars and pulled through to the far side. I don’t care about walking a distance I prefer to keep others from scratching my car.
The store was hot and crowded. Ugh. People were rude and there was some sort of group in there that stopped for little lectures every once in a while blocking entire aisles. The worst thing was the store had so many aisle displays about that you had trouble getting things from the shelves. It took me twice as long to get my shopping done.
Out in the parking lot, a woman has pulled her car behind mine, with dozens of spaces free, she pulls in there. As she got out of her car I thanked her profusely for making it difficult for me to put my groceries into my van. She didn’t get the sarcasm.
I hate the holidays.
You all have a good one!

Fall dinner–home made ham and bean soup
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Saturday, G and I went to the farmers market. I bought a very smoked ham hock. Sunday’s dinner was fresh ham and bean soup. Super smoky and delicious. I tend to use the simple recipe on the bag of navy beans. It never fails.

Spooky food

Now comes the figuring out the menu stage of our trick or treat fun. Our main dish is lasagna, I make a mean one. G is in charge of dessert.
We’re working on some snacks to nibble on during the trick or treat hours before we serve the post trick or treat dinner.
We will have a nice wine and mixed drink bar set up inside for our guests.
Last year, during the trick or treat hours, we drank vodka tonics outside–they glow in the black light, that was fun and we might repeat them this year.
Appetizers and some snacks are all we need to do. I could do a cheese ball mummy or a something.
Any ideas? What is your favorite spooky snack for Halloween?
