The memories a simple dessert brought

http://www.turkeyhill.com/products/premium-ice-cream-flavors.aspx?pID=479

The Curmudgeon and I had Turkey Hill Deep Dark Chocolate ice cream for dessert.  We looked at each other and said simultaneously, “Gramma would have loved this!  Jinx!”  Then we laughed.

To say my maternal grandmother was a chocoholic would be putting it mildly.  Gramma loved all things chocolate.  The darker and richer, the better.  Gramma taught all of us the love of all things chocolate.

The Curmudgeon learned early on in our dating that to give my Gramma chocolate whenever possible was to make a friend for life.  I think he fell in love with her about the third time they met.

His grandmother was an evil, nasty woman.  So to meet my Gramma who welcomed him into our home with warmth and baked goods was an experience he took to heart.

Did you BBQ?

Yesterday, we didn’t barbecue as we normally would have.  I didn’t dare run the grill because I knew for sure, with my luck, I’d run out of gas before the food cooked properly.  The Curmudgeon forgot to get the bottles filled/exchanged.

We did, however, have some lovely potato salad I made.  I also pulled some turkey tenderloin cutlets out of the freezer, thawed them, pounded them flat, breaded and quick seared them in my new non-stick pan.  Heavenly.  Tender, juicy, and flavorful morsels that made The Curmudgeon quite happy.

How did you celebrate Memorial Day?

Pizza anyone?

I have decided to add a variety of healthy pizzas to our diet, homemade pizzas.  I have a pizza stone ordered and on its way and have a nice wooden peel picked out for my next order.

Why have I decided this?  Well, I’ve acquired several pizza cookbooks for free on my Kindle and thought that over the summer I could use either my oven or my grill to make some tasty pizzas.  I think it’d be interesting to grill them.

The Curmudgeon loves pizza and this may be a way to get him to eat ‘healthier’ foods where he might actually enjoy them.

When I was a teen, our family had a killer pizza recipe that is now lost to me.  I’d sure love to find one similar to it among all these recipes.

You all have a good one.

No fresh veggies yesterday…but there’s always today

Plans to go to the gym yesterday fell through. When I called G, no one was home.  I figured they were running very late at the grocery store.  So much for the gym, the grocery store, and a stop at the farmers market on the way home.  I thought maybe I’d do the grocery store and farmers market run a little after noon.

Later on, after I got busy doing a few things around the house, I looked at the clock, and I realized that by then it was too late for me to go to the farmers market and grocery store.  I refuse to shop anywhere near three in the afternoon with all the mommies and their cranky kids and it was ten after three.

I’ll go to the farmers market and grocery store today.  I need fresh veggies and a few other things.

A new toy in the kitchen

I ordered a bacon/grill press last week.  It arrived yesterday.  I tested it last night on our breakfast for dinner, dinner.   I made sausage patties and French toast.  These sausage patties are what we get from Five Star Foods.  I love them but I never liked how they’d curl up.  I’d have to snip them four or five times around the edges to keep them flat.

The press worked nicely.  I am pleased, now I can’t wait to use it with my grill pan.  Oh, the paninis and other goodies I will make!

You all have a good one!

What’s for dinner?

The last couple of days I made left overs for dinners.  It’s time to make a few normal meals now since I am running out of those lovely leftovers.

Yes, when I see I once again have a large collection of plastic containers, I know it is time to start cooking big meals again.  This way I have left overs to put in the plastic containers and freeze for lazy days.

Beef stew sounds like a good start.  I have some gorgeous packages of tenderloin tips in the freezer that I can thaw for tomorrow.  They are so tender that I can whip up a large pot of stew in no time.

I will plan out several more meals where I can pack leftovers from them into the freezer.  I  do meals like this because I never know when I’ll need a fast, worry free meal.

Since I went grocery shopping yesterday, I can relax all weekend.

Simple cooking

I am by no means a poor cook.  Lately, however, I have become a lazy cook.  I am making more quick fresh meals and more crock pot meals.

Last night I made pan-seared, pounded turkey cutlets seasoned with garlic and basil. I served that with a home-made cheesy pasta side and sugar pea pods.  Tonight I will have roast beef, carrots, potatoes, and gravy.  All from my crock pot.

As The Curmudgeon says, he’ll never starve.  He also tells people, that 99% of what I cook is delicious.  There is that 1% of experimental dishes that fail but I think it’s a good record.

You all have a good one!

Diet sabotage…

My friend G brought over a container of Christmas cookies the other day.   I have managed to pick out all my favorites and am trying to convince The Curmudgeon to please eat all the rest  so they no longer tempt me.

Thank goodness she knows what ones I like the best and kept them to a minimum.  At least she warned me that she was bringing some cookies.  She gets that I am trying hard to lose weight.

The Curmudgeon never warns me, he always manages to sabotage my diet by bringing home irresistible chocolate candies.  I don’t think he gets it.

My will power is almost non-existent since I quit smoking over a year ago.  Sweet things especially are  impossible for me to resist.  That’s why I don’t buy any when I go grocery shopping.

I keep hoping I’ll find my self-control again.  Have you seen it?

You all have a good one.

Good food makes for a happy Curmudgeon

It’s always a treat when my neighbor and best friend G does some baking because we get samples.  We enjoyed some apple crisp for our dessert last night.  Yum!  It’s been a  long time since I’ve made it.  Therefore, this was an especially lovely treat since I didn’t have to work at it.  😉

Dinner was easy and quick too.  We had open-faced hot roast beef sandwiches made with the leftover roast beef and gravy from Sunday.

There’s nothing like an all comfort food dinner.  The Curmudgeon sure did enjoy it.

You all have a good one!

BBQ ribs!!!

A Facebook friend gave me a fabulous recipe for ribs starting with a wonderful dry rub and then a slow cooking method.  Well, I used the dry rub, had the ribs in it for 10 hours.  Then I put them into my crock pot with sliced onions under them and I poured a small amount of apple juice into the pot.  I cooked them on high for two hours and then turned them to low for three hours.  The last hour, I slathered them with BBQ sauce.  They were as yummy as they look.

What is comfort food for you?

Some days you want a simple dinner and nothing fancy.  That was us last night.  Comfort food.  I made grilled cheese with bacon sandwiches and cream of tomato soup.  We couldn’t believe how well it hit the spot for us.

We had so many large and somewhat fancy dinners all week, that was a nice change.  Fewer dishes to wash made it real nice after having to wash many dishes and pots and pans all week.

I am sorely tempted to make simple meals all weekend to give me a break.

Comfort food, I think we all crave it most at this time of year.  What is comfort food for you?

You all have a good one!

We’re having it for dinner again?

If The Curmudgeon wouldn’t shoot me I’d have lasagna for dinner again tonight.  We had it last night and it tasted even better than the lasagna we had the night before.

It’s not just how good it tastes, it’s how easy it is for me to heat and what few dishes I have to do afterwards.  Yep, I am lazy.

Anyone who wants cupcakes had better get over here.  I have a dozen left and they are tasty.  I do NOT need to eat a dozen cupcakes!

You all have a good one!
