Lovely day

What a great day for walking!  Annie and I made two circuits of the park.  We can’t do that on days when G walks with us.  G has had a knee replaced and once around the park is all she can handle before her other knee starts to kill her.  She dreads it but knows that one of these days that one too needs replacing.

We saw a wonderful sight by the second foot bridge.  An elderly Lab was tootling around (doing mini laps) in a small patch of deep water.  His mom was standing by keeping watch while he was thoroughly enjoying himself.   Two ducks nearby were unconcerned about his company.

I keep walking

G doesn’t go walking in the wind since her cataract surgery.   Annie and I had a great walk in a brisk 45 degree, windy day.  Although I thoroughly enjoyed it, I was very glad to get home to hot cup of coffee.  Gone was the warm weather of last week.

The strong winds grabbed most of the flowers from the magnolia tree and threw them on the ground.  We’re almost knee-deep in petals now.

The chilly weather screamed for a substantial dinner.  The Curmudgeon and I enjoyed low-fat cheese ravioli smothered in a heart smart sauce.

Gavin and Patty seemed disappointed that yesterday wasn’t as warm as the days we’ve had lately.

You all have a good one!

Great day to go walking.

So I didn’t win any money on the scratch-off ticket I bought yesterday.  It didn’t mean it was a bad day.  In fact it was a good day.

The weather was lovely.  G and I went for our walk in the Rose Gardens park.  This time we did the whole trail and used each exercise station except for one that was occupied at the time.

When we finished, we both remarked as to how good we felt.  The entire walk took us a little over half an hour.  We plan to do it again two more times this week.  We’d like to get a small group together to do these walks with us.

We do hope to work out an exercise plan that will take us through all the parks in the city this spring and summer.  We may do a week at one then a week at another.  We’re not quite sure.   We need to factor in a few things like what do we do when the weather is bad?  What if someone is sick?  If we’re running late getting there,  do we call the other members of the group?

Walking again was wonderful!

G and I went for our walk at the Rose Gardens park yesterday.  They’ve put in new exercise stations along the path.  We had great fun trying them out.  Since this was my first walk in the new shoes, we walked half the park only.  There’s no need to begin this walking for better health project with blisters or very sore muscles.

Weather permitting, we plan to do this at least once a week.  We had fun, we got in our walk, and we did some bonus exercises at the stations.

Next time we’ll add the south half of the park to our walk.  I’m looking forward to checking out the exercise stations over there.  None of them so far were difficult and all were rather fun.

You all have a good one!

Heart healthy recipe fails

Yesterday I wrote about how I found many good heart healthy recipes.  It is difficult to find recipes that both The Curmudgeon and I will enjoy.

I will try most anything but he refuses to eat things like fish and all veggie dishes.  Little does he know he has been eating at least one all veggie meal a week.

However, there was a soup that neither one of us could manage to choke down.  I have enjoyed Butternut Squash Soup in many forms but unfortunately the one recipe I tried was downright awful.  The Curmudgeon said, “Never make that one again!”   He doesn’t need to worry because I won’t make it.  Ever.  Again.

The Adzuki Beans and Rice dish was another failure.  I liked them but the Curmudgeon didn’t.  I’ll keep hitting him with all veggie meals until he gets used to one or two a week.

Heart healthy diet wins

I figured I’d start with some of the heart healthy diet meals that were real winners.  The American Heart Association Meals in Minutes cook book had some great recipes.

The best recipe from that book so far is the Parmesan Pork Medallions.  The Curmudgeon and I loved it!  I gave some left overs to G and she and her husband loved them too.  Most of the recipes I’ve tried from that book have gone over well.   The No Chop Stew is excellent too and very easy to make.

The recipes in the Cardiac Recovery book were not as successful in the house.  The Curmudgeon did enjoy some of the recipes like the BBQed Chicken Spicy Southern Style and the Jamaican Jerk Chicken.   He did not care for many of the soups and beef recipes.

I’m still testing recipes and modifying old stand bys, it isn’t easy now with our beef heavy freezer.  The new shipment of meats will help a lot since I ordered less beef and much more poultry and fish.

Wanted: new heart smart recipes

I am still experimenting with new recipes.  The Curmudgeon has so far only liked about half of what I’ve tried from the heart healthy cookbooks I bought.

Help, I am quickly running out of recipes.  I downloaded another fifteen free cookbooks to my Kindle and only about half of those are heart healthy.

Do you have any heart smart recipes you love and men tolerate well?  If so, please post them in my comments section to share with me and other heart patients.

I need to diet on the heart smart diet

It seems to me that the heart smart changes in my diet have done nothing except put weight on me.   How heart smart can that be?

I do believe that fruits, whole grains, and oatmeal like to migrate to my stomach and boobage.  My fat loves the heart smart diet and I am not amused…

It’s time to change again and this time go for what works in taking off the weight and controlling my cholesterol.

Now if I can only find my old hand written diet that I had years ago.  I managed to take off weight on that one with no problem.  It’s somewhere in this house…

Write the perfect want ad

My body is flabby.  My brain is flabbier.  I am out of shape both physically and mentally.  Although I’ve quit smoking and am eating healthier meals I find I’m gaining pounds by leaps and bounds.

I’ve tried exercising but since I’m basically a very lazy person I tend to fade fast.  That also goes for any writing exercises I’ve tried.  My brain tends to overload rather quickly.

At this point, I’m beginning to think that I not only need a personal trainer to kick me physically back into shape, but I also need a personal writing trainer to tie me to my desk and hold a gun to my head.

Maybe one that does both.  How does one write that want ad?  How would you write it?
