Oh, the carnage in a rewrite.
Posted by doggonedmysteries
As writers, we all write phrases, similes, or metaphors that we find irresistible. We are in love with them. However, when we have someone read our offering and they say those certain phrases we hold dear suck, well that’s when we realize that no one else likes our attempts at cute, humor, or brilliance.
In that case, we need to slaughter them. (No, not the readers.) We need to kill those phrases, similes, or metaphors the readers find that take them out of the story. We must put our fingers on the delete key and get to work.
Yes, ouch.
Then again, you may want to keep those babies of yours because you find them to be brilliant. Remove them from the story anyway and store them elsewhere. Weeks, months, maybe years down the road, you’ll go back, re-read them, wonder why you found them to be so fantastic, and then be willing to let them die a dignified death.
We mustn’t fall so profoundly in love with our writing that we refuse to let our stories evolve.
I’m doing three different rewrites right now and you wouldn’t believe the carnage.

I began to write again
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I always danced to a different drummer. I never fit in with the ‘in’ crowd. I wasn’t a nerd, I wasn’t an athlete, and I wasn’t a straight A student. I barely cracked a book and was happy with A’s and B’s giving me a high B average. I was bored and ignored in school.
I did a lot of daydreaming and spent most of the time with my nose in a book. I wrote bad teenaged angst filled poetry and short stories. I loved my art and English classes.
My junior year of high school I had an English teacher that managed to light a spark. At first I frustrated her because I’d read every book on her book list. Then she made another list. I messed her up on that one too since I’d already read over half of those books. She didn’t give up. She saw something in me that most teachers had overlooked. She’d never had a student quite like me. I had a passion for reading and writing. She never stopped pushing and prodding me the whole year.
For years afterwards, I put that passion for writing aside, busy with working and keeping house. Then one day I began to write again.

This is my 500th post!
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Wow, it makes feel as if I should have a celebration or something. Grab your party hats, raise your glasses, and toss some confetti. (I said confetti, not your cookies Mr. B. Elena cleaned up after you once today.)
I’ve noticed I can never predict how many readers a post will get. I don’t even come close. There are some that, as I write them, I think will draw readers. Only to find out at the end of the day, I was completely wrong.
I find that I am statistics addicted when it comes to my posts. After I go to my dashboard to approve comments, I hit the statistics page. Some totals I find easy to understand and others make me wonder. 6 hits a day or more on my Bottomline Books posts—easy to understand, they fleece people daily.
What makes me wonder, you ask. I wonder what sort of posts my readers prefer to read. Would you be interested in some short stories? My struggles of working to change from one of the unpublished to the published? Dialogues with the little editor, my muse, and characters? More ‘life with the idiot dogs’ tales? Life as the wife of someone with MS? Gardening? More recipes? On the other hand, I could continue to wing it as I’ve done for the last 500 posts.
On the weather front …It’s still snowing here and along with it, we have wind, lots of wind. I’m glad that I added fresh water to the pond when the temperature hit 45 degrees the other day, at least I don’t have to worry about the Koi.

Now my characters are chewing me out
Posted by doggonedmysteries
“Where the heck have you been?” My main character asked me as I sat down to write.
“I’ve been busy.”
“That’s a fine thing. You go haring off to deal with your life and leave me stuck here up to my neck in trouble.” She stands with arms crossed over her chest.
“It’s not as if your neck is flesh and blood you know.”
She begins to pout. “Oh, yeah? Hey, you keep that attitude up and I’ll walk.”
“You’ll only do that if I give you legs and a place to go.” I reached for the delete key.
“Don’t get hasty, you know you like me.”
I pulled my hand back. “You’re the one who jumped on me not the other way around.”
“Okay, I apologize. Don’t get your panties in a twist.”
“Let’s see if I can get you out of your little situation.”
“If? What do you mean by if? You better get me out of this or you’ll have to write a whole new character to take my place.”
“Quiet. I’m working on it.” Type, type, type…
“Are you kidding me? You want me to do what? Who do you think I am Wonder Woman?”
“Oh, for cryin’ out loud.” Delete, delete, delete…

I sent myself a PajamaGram
Posted by doggonedmysteries
It began with an idea for a character in one of the books I’m working on—her pajamas. She’s supposed to have a pair of PJs with bulldogs on them. My character secretly collects all things with bulldogs. (Not unlike the way that I collect bull terriers.) She owns a bulldog. Yes, this book has a bulldog and not a bull terrier. It’s not from the Doggoned series and one of these days, I’ll reveal more about this book, but not yet.
Anyway, back to the research…I went surfing for a pair of bulldog PJs. What I found I wasn’t happy with so I kept hunting through sites that sold PJs. I hadn’t intended to buy anything. Truly dear readers, I did not intend to buy anything. I was looking for my character’s PJs. I wanted to be able to describe them in detail.
Then I hit the PajamaGram site. I told you I collect bull terrier stuff, right? Over the years, a friend has presented me with New Yorker magazine covers that have that white dog, the one that sorta kinda looks like a BT, on it. (I need to get those framed one of these days.) Well there they were, New Yorker dog PJs. I squealed with delight. DH got curious and came to see what I had me so tickled.
I pointed to the screen where I’d enlarged the fabric pattern. By this time, I was wiping drool off my chin.
He laughed when he saw the dog he knows so well from our collection.
“I have to have them,” I said.
“Yes, you do.”
I looked at the price and started to waffle. “I do need some new Jammies. The PW conference is coming up…my old ones are looking ratty. But—“
“Buy them. They’re cute.”
The cheapskate in me reared its ugly head. “They cost way more than I’d normally pay for any.”
“Oh, for heaven’s sake, just order them.”
“They can be your Valentine’s gift to me.”
DH rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry about it. Buy them.”

Word choices
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I can’t tell you how often I will fuss over word choices. A first draft is rife with bad choices. My verbs are feeble and lackluster. The descriptions are hackneyed and drab.
“It’s boring, boring, BORING!” I scream as I read over a new page. “I can do better.”
I believe my delete and backspace keys will wear out long before any of the other keys on my keyboard.
Dear Hubby and Gavin are used to this and don’t bat an eye. Patty will often dive for her crate but that’s how she is.
I go over each word, dredging for something better, brighter, and stronger. No wonder it takes me so long to write. I want my readers to feel the textures, hear the sounds, see, even taste and smell what my character sees, tastes and smells. I want to yank you into the story, suspend your disbelief, and entertain you.
Have patience with me. It’s my greatest hope that you will feel satisfied and entertained when you finish one of them. If I can do that, and make you want more, I will be content.

Rejection letters
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I could paper a room with my rejection letters. That would be enough to discourage most normal people. I never said I was normal. With each rejection letter I’ve received, I’ve been lucky because for some reason the person who has written the letter has taken the time to comment on my writing. I, in turn, have taken the time to listen to their comments and my writing has improved.
I say I’m lucky because so many writers that I know have received the standard form letter type of rejection. A few even got the nasty ‘don’t quit your day job’ types. Those are enough to make a person consider murder—at least in print. Yes, when you read a mystery where one kills an editor or agent, the person who wrote it probably got one of those letters.
Rejection letters are a normal course for writers. They teach us to have the skins of rhinos. What could possibly be worse than a bad rejection letter?
One thing, a critique that not only shreds your book, your dignity, and lacks saying anything constructive but it makes you doubt yourself. I’ll go into that at another time.

Are your characters likable?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Plot twists, bodies, red herrings, murder scenes, cops, and bad guys aren’t all there is to a mystery. Your characters are the stars of the story. Therefore, the characters need to draw in the reader. They have to be likable or, at the very least, intriguing.
Editors didn’t like my first mystery. No, that’s not true; most of them liked the mystery. I have the lovely long rejection letters to prove it. However, they didn’t like my main character. She was too independent, too gritty. They couldn’t warm up to her. No matter that, her father and several loving but gristly ranch hands raised her. She was a person they didn’t understand. Their world wasn’t ready for that character.
However, my agent loved her. She worked hard to sell the book. Willing to continue to try to sell it, I think she felt let down when I pulled it to write something different.
Several years have passed, and maybe I should have her shop it around again. After all, since then the program Saving Grace became a hit. Grace is gritty, tough, and an independent character.
Could it be that editors would give the book a second look today? One never knows, but for now, I’m too busy with my works in progress to rewrite that one.

Writer’s guides: Yes, they are useful
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I can’t mention any writer’s guides books without first giving Lee Lofland’s book, Police Procedure & Investigation a guide for writers, a plug. Hey, what can I say? I know the guy and the book is a valuable resource, as is his web page. (Take a note Lee; you might be getting a few more sales here. Or, at the very least, some fact checking E-mails from me.)
Writer’s Digest Books puts out tons of fantastic books for writers. Right now, I’m making heavy use of Lee’s book and one written by Hal Blythe, Charlie Sweet, & John Landreth, Private Eyes a writer’s guide to private investigators.
Also, thank heavens, I have to two real life PIs I can use as resources. One of them I met at a writer’s conference and the other one Dear Hubby knows. Not everything I write comes from books. I do check my facts with the real McCoys.
Both of the books I’ve mentioned are from Writer’s Digest Books Howdunit Series. They also put out The Elements of Fiction Writing Series and the Behind The Scenes series. I think I’m missing one or two from that last series. Hmmm, I think I need a shopping list.

Writing, using others as soundboards
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I am fortunate to have a husband, a critiquing group, another mystery writer (Dave), and a good friend (G) to bounce ideas off when I need to. Without them, I’d probably be stuck in some dark padded cell neatly decked out in a white coat that buckles in the back.
Granted Dear Hubby will sometimes roll his eyes when the idea I have makes no sense, but he will help me work through it until it does. He has also come up with some ideas I didn’t think of and they have been great.
When I’m in the throes of writer’s block, Dave will ever so kindly get online and have a long BS session with me in IM. He never fails to help me find new angles, red herrings, or scenes.
When I hand my finished chapters to my critiquing group, they will catch things I didn’t see. Boy, do they catch them. They will let me bounce ideas off them on chapters I’ve not yet written.
Don’t be afraid to use others as a soundboard. However, be aware that some people aren’t going to be helpful. Then there will be other ones, where you will wonder how you ever did any writing without them.

Rewriting, or why doesn’t that editor on my shoulder shut up?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
“There that chapter is fixed.” I stretch and let out a satisfied sigh.
My little editor taps me on the shoulder. “Why did you take out that scene?”
“Because it didn’t work with the changes I made. Besides, the new scene is better.”
“But I liked that scene. It was a good scene.” The editor kicks me in the temple.
“Ouch. Shut up. It’s not going back in. It doesn’t work.”
“And yet you kept that awful dialogue on page sixty one,” he says with a sneer.
“That was good dialogue. What makes you say it was awful?”
“Would anyone truly say that? Is it realistic?”
Beads of sweat break out on my forehead. I pop up the page and read the dialogue aloud. “I think it’s realistic. I don’t see any problem with it.”
“Okay, I’ll let that slide, but—“
“No buts. It’s time to move on to the next chapter.”
“Okay. In the first scene, you need to—“
“Shut up! Let me do it. I know what I want to do here.”
The editor flops onto the back of my chair and whines, “You never listen to me.”
“Do too.”
“Do not.”
“Have it your way. Now, chapter thirteen, page seventy seven. Scene one stays as it is.”
“Are you sure about that?”
