It is Fenced!!

Before eight yesterday morning our fence was halfway down.  Before four in the afternoon the new fence was up.  By four-fifteen two dogs had tested their new boundaries and were pleased.

Gavin promptly lifted his leg on the front corner of the yard and then in the back.  He kicked dirt about with his back feet and claimed the new fence suitable.

Patty nosed along the entire length of the fence and after being told to get out of the gardens didn’t bother with it again.

New fencing

Although we will have to tighten our belts a lot for the next couple of months to pay for it, we are having the fencing that runs down the alley side of yard replaced.  I need to do this to take some pressure off The Curmudgeon and me.

This means The Curmudgeon won’t have to walk all over the yard with the dogs when he has them out because with the new fencing he’ll be able to let them run loose.  I can take them outside with me when I’m gardening and they’ll get more exercise.

The picket fence will now be replaced with  solid fencing.  The dogs can’t get through it, and If I’m lucky, I can take that old fencing and rig something between the two yards.  I figure I can hook the pickets and rails to the chain link and voila, instant privacy fence there since that fence is about half the length of the alley side fence.

Installation could begin as early as Thursday.

     Bye bye pickets.

Puttered in the garden…

Yesterday I had a chance to putter about in the garden.  We had sun and it was warm enough that I didn’t need a jacket.  YES!

I was working on the pond, back washing the filters, and skimming crud from the river.  The Curmudgeon decided to join me.  He must have felt fairly good because he knelt beside the pond and with much groaning and moaning hauled Pan out and managed to fix the hose.  We now have a working fountain again.

I managed to clean the filters and clean out several of my pots.  I would love to have enough nice days to Spring clean all the gardens.

Once I get that done, I’ll be able to map out what I’d like to do for hard-scape and raised flower beds.  Keep your fingers crossed that we have several warm and dry days.

You all have a good one!

Ch ch ch changes….

Today’s sunny weather had me craving Spring something fierce.  I can’t wait to go work in the garden and get walking again.

I have hopes of making some rather large changes to the yard and garden this year.  The pond is going to have to go, I can’t do the upkeep alone, there were some things The Curmudgeon could do easier than I can and he can do them no longer.  Know anyone in PA who wants some lovely, large Koi?  Have them contact me.

I’m hoping to install new stronger, dog-proof fencing between the yards, across the front, and down the alley side.  I want my poor dogs  able to run and play in their yard without me having to hold them on a leash every time they go out.

So far here’s what my Spring looks like:

  • Re-home Koi and fill in pond
  •  Find a fencing company
  • Build raised planting beds and patio with pergola

Looks like I’ll be keeping a certain landscaping company in the money and working my buns off to boot.

You all have a good one!

I can’t wait…

Is anyone else dying for this to come back?

Garden talk

Hot day again today.  I did manage to get some weeding done even though I drenched my clothes twice, definitely need a shower tonight.  ;D  I now have three barrels of yard waste to put out at the curb again.  With all the rain we’ve had the past few days, the soft ground let the weeds go willingly.

My two little frogs are doing well, much to my relief.  I have hopes that they are a pair and will later keep a population going.

I am quite pleased with how my potted vegetable garden is doing.  It won’t be long and I’ll have tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers!

You all have a good one!

We have two frogs

My neighbor’s son brought me three frogs that he found at his job site today.  Unfortunately one died tonight probably from the lengthy transport in a dirty bucket.  The kid means well but has no idea that a clean bucket and water from where he got them would’ve been wiser.  I feel sorry for the frog but after watching the other two munching down on mosquitoes tonight I am happy they are here in my pond.  The good news is they aren’t bullfrogs.

So the tree guy won’t be here until wednesday….

Meanwhile more damage is done to my poor tree by waiting–another branch broke under the weight of the broken parts yesterday.

It grew to 150 feet…

As we wait today for the tree guy to come, I remember the day my mother, The Curmudgeon, and I went looking for a tree to plant here.  We went to three different nurseries.  I was looking for two trees one for here and one for the side garden area.  Mom said she would buy one.

Finally, in the third place we tried, I found a Sweet Gum I liked, it was about five feet tall.  We walked for a long while when Mom stopped, pointed,  and said, “There it is.  There’s the perfect tree.”  She was right.  It was a big leaved fast growing native shade tree, a six-foot tall, beautifully shaped Tulip Poplar.

A storm passed through here Saturday night.  Lightning struck her tree.  This beautiful tree that shades the entire side of the house and keeps us cooler in the summer.  I’m hoping the tree guy can save most of the tree.  I know we’ve lost a large part of the top…

I’ve lost Mom, I don’t want to lose her tree too.

Pictures today.
