Even my fish have me trained

The dogs are spoiled.  I admit it they have us well trained.  DH claims that the Koi have me well trained too.  Can I help it if they love worms and I poke around next to the compost bin to find some so my fish can enjoy a snack?  It’s fun to have my lovely finny pets come to the surface and take the worms from my hand.

Even our new little guy is getting into the act.  He was brave enough to take a worm from me last night.  Yes, I keep saying he in hopes that this new one is a male since the other six are females.  He still looks tiny next to them but he is growing rapidly.

It’s a frog!

Last year we lost all of our bullfrogs to traffic or wanderlust on their parts.  We’ve only ever had bullfrogs, since bullfrog tadpoles were all we could get.  This year my favorite pond guy had native green frog tadpoles.  I bought a dozen and I’m thinking of going back for more since we lost four.

I had a wonderful surprise when I went out to feed the fish this evening.  At least one of our remaining eight tadpoles has turned into a frog.  He is no bigger than a dime.  I’m looking forward to more and I hope they make noise this summer.

Almost done with the planting

I spent the day in the gardens planting flowers.  The weather was perfect for it.  We had a comfortable day with cool breezes and low humidity.

I’m down to finding places for five large cannas and a bunch of elephant ears.  I’m going to have to dig out flowers to put them in.  This won’t be a problem.  The moss rose, Echinacea, and calendulas are taking over.  I’ve begun pulling them like weeds.  There’s also a large quantity of sedum coming up in every flowerbed.

Where did that clerk go?

Woo wee, we had another humid and hot day today.  I got out and enjoyed it.  I dug out the pitchfork and turned the soil by the back fence.  Then later, when the sun was off the area, I planted four more tomato plants, two cucumber plants, and three different types of eggplant.  That means I have five different types of eggplant in the ground now.  Two are in a pot along the side of the house.

I made a run over to Home Depot, which was not the smartest thing to do today.  I struggled with and got my bags of potting soil into a cart but couldn’t find anyone to help me with the mulch.  There wasn’t an orange apron to be seen anywhere.  Soon, I was too hot and tired to care.  I paid for the potting soil, and spray foam insulation for the MIL’s house, and left.

I can go elsewhere for my mulch where they actually are eager to help you and will even load the mulch into the car.  Sorry Home Depot you aren’t service oriented and I need help.  I can’t load that many heavy bags into my car by myself.  After loading two bags, I’m shot.

Another peek into my garden

It’s amazing how a dozen tadpoles can so cleverly disappear into the pond.  They hide so well it’s a rare thing for us to spot one.  I did spy one hiding in the river tonight.  I can’t wait for them to become frogs.  It’ll be a real treat to have green frogs living here instead of the bullfrogs we’ve had so often.

G has a bullfrog in her pond.  He’s been there several years, probably because he’s not as dumb as ours were.  Ours went walk about and several were run over by cars in the alley between our house and the cemetery hunting grounds.  Hers stays in their yard, catches starlings, and completely grosses her out by leaving the dead birds floating in the pond.  He seems to enjoy the EEK factor with her.

Our new Koi seems to be settling in well.  It’s going to take some time before he is as big as the six girls he swims with now.  I keep saying he because I am desperately hoping this one is a male.

I still have a bunch of plants to get into the ground even though I have planted some every day so far.

I love this weather

It was hot outside yesterday and the dogs are quite spoiled by their Daddy’s need for air conditioning.  Patty spent the day sprawled out on the couch and Gavin alternated between his chair and the floor in front of the air conditioner.

I spent most of the day outside planting some of my flowers and veggie plants and working on the pond.  I only came in to rehydrate and take the dogs out to pee.  Well, it was more like dragging the dogs out.  They didn’t want to leave the air conditioning.  DH and the dogs think I’ve lost my mind.  I hate to tell them that it took a walk a long time ago.

I’ll be out working on the garden again today.  I need to weed along the back fence and get the rest of the tomatoes planted there.  Then on Tuesday, I need to buy more potting soil so I can put flowers in the pots out front and in the wrought iron stand that I brought home from the MIL’s house.

Garden news

I wish it would get dry enough that I could go out and enjoy my garden.  Many of my iris plants are in bloom and I’m missing them with all the rain keeping me indoors.

Imagine my surprise today when I went to the basement to do wash and found the cannas I had down there had sprouts and leaves.  Some of the leaves were quite tall already.  The black elephant ears I had down there didn’t look great and only one has a sprout.  I hope they made it but I won’t know until after I get them planted.

All of the columbine are blooming, as are some of my new perennials I put in last year.  Those didn’t bloom last year so it’s nice to see them showing off for me now.

I spent about an hour early this evening yanking weeds out from alongside the driveway where they were determined to choke out the iris I have growing there.  With the wet ground, the pulling was easy.  I now have happy iris.

More garden pictures

Since fishing was a bust yesterday I worked in the garden until dark.

Picture day!

I took the camera outside this afternoon.

The gardening begins!

Although we had clouds that threatened rain all day, we had a warm and pleasant day yesterday.  When I woke up and saw the sky, I put off my trip to the grocery store.  I knew with my luck, it would pour buckets full, when I had to carry all of the bags into the house.  Therefore, I decided to try to sneak in some much-needed gardening before the rain.

I could’ve gone grocery shopping since the rain never made an appearance.  However, I’m glad I did the gardening because I managed to clean out both the side and pond gardens before dinner.  It felt good to be outside for change.

I have only one more area to clean out and ready for planting and that’s along the back fence.  For now all I need to do is trim back the zebra grass and keep the weeds from overrunning the area until it’s time to plant my veggies there.

I’m glad to see my perennials are happy and thriving because I’ll split some of them to take over and enhance the landscape at the MIL’s house.

Out like a lion

At least the flowers are trying to bloom.   Goodbye March!

Signs of spring

We begin a new month.  We’re closer to spring now, oh joy!

When I took the dogs out today, I saw crocus and daffodils poking out of the ground in the gardens and they were over an inch high.  The day lilies, iris, and many other flowers are awakening too.

For the last week, huge flocks of geese have flown over our house every day.  Some of them are so high you can barely spot the Vs but you can still hear them honking.

The robins haven’t appeared yet but they can’t be far behind.  Birds are beginning to hang around the feeders in larger groups and the crows in the cemetery are practicing their aerobatics.  They swoop low over the tombstones and grass racing each other to the tallest spires.

I’ve had to chase suet raiding squirrels out of the yard several times a day.  Yes, spring is arriving.
