Rain glorious rain
Posted by doggonedmysteries
We finally got some rain, a great deal of rain. The flash flood warnings were out in force. I didn’t have to water my garden or potted plants. In fact, I had to tip some water out of a couple of pots. Am I complaining? Not a bit.
Our brown lawn is already greening up, the trees that were looking droopy now look blissful, and the gardens have perked up tremendously. The birds are excited because now that the ground is moist again the worms are closer to the surface.
The air is cooler and it was nice to go outside and not feel as though I was suffocating. Even DH is feeling more chipper. The pups spent the day chasing each other around the house.

Yes, I’m going to complain about the heat
Posted by doggonedmysteries
The last time I remember being in 103-degree weather, I was in Texas. Have I ever mentioned how much I dislike Texas? We hit a record of 103 degrees yesterday. Sorry, my southern friends, but some of us weren’t designed to tolerate temperatures over 90-degrees. Please, be kind enough to take your heat back and let us enjoy our normal summer weather.
Just taking the dogs out a several times so they could relieve themselves was more than enough. The five minutes it took to water my potted plants about killed me.
I’m not fond of cold, snow, and ice but I put up with it for our cooler summers. I like being able to go outside all summer. I hate staying inside in the AC. I’m no Southern Belle I’m a damned Yankee.

Thanks Mother Nature that was a nice gift

After so many dreary days of rain, it was nice to see sunshine today. I managed to get outside and plant a few of my cannas. It’s amazing how many places I don’t have room to plant this year. I guess this means I won’t spend as much at the nursery next week as I normally do. My list has whittled down to veggies and (if I can find them) two more black iris plants. Only one of mine made it from last year.
Around six this evening I happened to be out on the front porch when we had another quick rainstorm pass through. I grumbled and then looked off to the south and what should I see but a gorgeous double rainbow. Who cares that it rained again. The rainbow made up for it. That’s what I call eye candy.

Wet and blustery
Posted by doggonedmysteries
They didn’t want to go out at all yesterday and I didn’t blame them. It poured all afternoon and by nighttime, we had thunderstorms move through here. Sometime, right before the first thunderstorm, the winds picked up—gusts of up to 65 mph. The stop sign on our corner, post and all, made a short flight. The racket was enough to make us bolt out of our chairs a step out on the windswept porch to see what had caused it.
One of our large plastic trashcans made it from the side of the house to the back fence. At least I didn’t have to fish it out of the pond. I was surprised that the plastic bench I brought home from the MIL’s house stayed put. I half expected to find that in the neighbor’s yard.
The ‘fixed’ roof leaked again. I wasn’t surprised since the heavy rain was wind driven. Our roofer will be chagrinned. He was certain he had the leakage stopped. Sigh, one of these days I wish to have a home that doesn’t leak.

Wonderful weather
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I was thrilled yesterday that I could open my windows and let fresh air in. It hit 82 here. Of course, that accelerated the blooming of the magnolia tree. A couple of days from now and it’ll be in full bloom if the rain doesn’t knock the blossoms off.
The warm weather brought the neighbors out to enjoy the evening air. DH got a chance to become reacquainted with Chocolate, the dog across the street. She hadn’t seen him all winter so was a tad barky when he came over to see her. A couple of cookies and some good scritches later, he was getting kisses from her. Before he came over, she’d been all over me but we stayed friends all winter because I always had a cookie and some loving for her whenever I saw her outside.
When we went back inside, I was in trouble with our two dogs. Both Patty and Gavin had to give me the once over at least twice. I’d sinned.

The gardening begins!
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Although we had clouds that threatened rain all day, we had a warm and pleasant day yesterday. When I woke up and saw the sky, I put off my trip to the grocery store. I knew with my luck, it would pour buckets full, when I had to carry all of the bags into the house. Therefore, I decided to try to sneak in some much-needed gardening before the rain.
I could’ve gone grocery shopping since the rain never made an appearance. However, I’m glad I did the gardening because I managed to clean out both the side and pond gardens before dinner. It felt good to be outside for change.
I have only one more area to clean out and ready for planting and that’s along the back fence. For now all I need to do is trim back the zebra grass and keep the weeds from overrunning the area until it’s time to plant my veggies there.
I’m glad to see my perennials are happy and thriving because I’ll split some of them to take over and enhance the landscape at the MIL’s house.

It is colder than a brass brassiere in the arctic
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Dang, it’s 2 a.m. and the dogs want out. It is COLD out there! The pups don’t care they want out when they want out. I need a cup of coffee to take the chill off. This isn’t spring it feels like freaking winter. I’m glad I didn’t put the winter jacket, gloves, and hat away.
I’m also glad we haven’t removed the pond heater yet because I think if had, there’d be ice on it. It wouldn’t be so bad if there were no wind. It felt like below zero out there.
I really, really, really want the warm weather to get here. Now. Not later. (Shut up, Dave. You had your winter now I want WARM weather.)
Time for that coffee.

The weather gods are meanest in the spring
Posted by doggonedmysteries
My crocuses are all in full bloom and my daffodils are ready to blossom. I enjoyed the lovely signs of spring while I could yesterday. The weather forecast for today and the rest of the week is dismal.
When I took the dogs out at two in the morning it was raining, snowing, and sleeting. The dogs and I were not amused. The dogs don’t want snow they’ve been enjoying the grassy yard. I don’t want snow any more than I’d want a root canal.
You’d think the weather gods could make up their minds wouldn’t you. I think they enjoy playing with our heads. It’s not nice to give us lovely, warm days and then send this crap along.
It’s like dangling candy in front of a kid then snatching it away as they reach for it.
“Oh, look at this! Do you want it?”
“Yes! Yes! Give it to me.”
“Here, reach out your hand.”
The pudgy hand of the child reaches for the brightly wrapped candy her fingers feel the touch of the paper…
“Nope.” The candy is snatched away. “You can’t have it.”
Cruel.

Too much rain
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Saturated ground, leaky roof, and a drenched basement, it’s time to load the Ark and set sail for dry land. The yard is swampy, the pond overfloweth, and the squirrels are wearing raincoats, hats, and boots to raid the bird feeders. The birds broke out the water wings. The pups are begging for scuba gear. Yes, there’s too much rain.

Signs of spring
Posted by doggonedmysteries
We begin a new month. We’re closer to spring now, oh joy!
When I took the dogs out today, I saw crocus and daffodils poking out of the ground in the gardens and they were over an inch high. The day lilies, iris, and many other flowers are awakening too.
For the last week, huge flocks of geese have flown over our house every day. Some of them are so high you can barely spot the Vs but you can still hear them honking.
The robins haven’t appeared yet but they can’t be far behind. Birds are beginning to hang around the feeders in larger groups and the crows in the cemetery are practicing their aerobatics. They swoop low over the tombstones and grass racing each other to the tallest spires.
I’ve had to chase suet raiding squirrels out of the yard several times a day. Yes, spring is arriving.

Yippee the snow is melting!
Posted by doggonedmysteries
You can now see patches of mud and grass in the yard. We still have snow left but at least it is going away. Today we’re supposed to have record warm temperatures so that should melt a lot more off. I’d be VERY happy to see it all gone.
Since we hit 66 degrees yesterday afternoon, I was outside with the dogs without having to wear a jacket. Those of you in the south probably think I’m nuts. However, I have actual blood running through my veins and am quite comfortable. (Okay, I slapped myself for that comment, are you happy?)
The pups loved all the sunshine that streamed in through the kitchen window and they both wrangled with each other to get the prime sunny spot in which to doze.
Y’all have a good day!
