Rain + snow = fog
Posted by doggonedmysteries
There’s still a lot of snow on the ground and now we’re having rain on top of it. If you mix freezing cold ground with warmer air and rain you get fog, thick ground-hugging fog. Oh yeah, baby it’s foggy outside.
It’s what I call a Bela Lugosi fog. I love it because it is mystery, thriller and intrigue. It is the substance of fairy tales and nightmares. Fog is an eerie dance.
It captivates the imagination and inspires. It is a muse running freely.
Warm summer nights are when fog is the best. You can play in it. It’s too cold to play in this one.

I will be happy for mud
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Do they make doggie ice skates? Gavin and Patty certainly could’ve used them yesterday. The yard has turned into a rather large ice rink. There has to be at least a two-inch layer of ice on the snow now.
I will be so glad to see all that snow and ice melt away that I won’t complain about having a muddy yard. Well, I promise not to complain too much. Hmm, maybe I should I hang a note up to remind of that when the dogs and DH track a ton of mud across the kitchen floor.
AJ has made out like a bandit with all the shoveling she’s been doing this winter. It has taken its toll on her though. I do adore this hard working woman who has kept the MIL’s and our walks clear for two winters now. I don’t know what we’d do without her.

I’m glad I don’t live in South Dakota…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
On one of my snow posts, Chuck quoted something DH has often said …”Just remember that all you need to think about when you think you have it soooo bad you don’t always have to look to far to see that some poor schmuck always has it worse….”
That certainly hit home today. I received an E-mail from my ex brother in law and in it were 20 some pictures taken in Lead, South Dakota back on January 5th when they were hit with a major blizzard.
I’d post the pictures but I don’t know who took them so I can’t get their permission. However, picture if you will snow so deep that it makes huge snowplows look like toy trucks. Two and three story homes covered to the rooftops and people having to shovel their roofs because there’s at least six feet of snow on them.
Can you imagine looking out your windows and seeing snow packed up against them? How about opening your door to a wall of snow? YIKES! Yeah, my feelings exactly. Somehow, that makes the total of 29.9 inches for the winter so far not seem quite so bad.

And then there was ICE
Posted by doggonedmysteries
If you read yesterday’s post you know that my friend Dave is delighted with this weather. I am not. AJ cleared our driveway tonight so that’s not a problem. We now have to contend with ICE. The heavy snow on the roofs of our house is dripping and growing into substantial icicles. Then the drips are hitting the walks and steps turning them into skating rinks. We are running out of salt.
Now running out of salt wouldn’t be that bad since normally I can drive to the store and get more. However, I have a problem. My van has a flat tire AGAIN. I thought we were done with this problem after we had the wheels polished and tires checked last month. Nope. It’s BAAAACK!
I do not drive DH’s truck. Ever. I don’t like his truck. I don’t like to drive it. I have too many blind spots when I do drive it. I had one narrow escape while driving his truck and I haven’t driven it since.
Then there’s that ice problem again. I hate ice. Our street is very icy and for some reason the salt truck skipped us the last two storms.
Hey, Dave do you deliver salt?

Yuck, did we ever get snow this time
Posted by doggonedmysteries
“Who filled out the order form for all this snow?” I asked.
“Dave did.” A little voice told me.
“Dave? I’ll kill him.” I gnashed my teeth and paced the floor.
“You’ll be lucky if you can punch him in the knee caps.” The little voice began to giggle.
I tugged on boots, yanked a snow hat over my hair, and threw on my coat and scarf. “Shut up!” I went outside to shovel a path in the yard so the dogs could go. Grumbling under my breath, “Dave could at least come down here and shovel this mess.”
This storm made last February’s blizzard look like a flurry. Isn’t it spring yet?
Quit laughing Dave…

You know it’s COLD outside when…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
The dogs run out do their business and dash back in, in record time.
Long icicles hang from everything.
The cars are grumpy when you try to start them.
The pond heater is working overtime and the Koi are hanging out directly beneath it.
You step outside and your breath freezes in mid-air and drops to the ground with a thud.
You have no desire to go out even when wearing long underwear, layers of clothing, a very warm coat, gloves, and boots.
Yep, it is that COLD outside. When the hell is spring going to get here?

More snow and panic shoppers
Posted by doggonedmysteries
We’ve more snow. It started snowing in the evening, it’s three in the morning Friday as I post this, and still the snow is coming down. I’m glad I did my regular grocery shopping in the afternoon on Thursday. My list had grown over the past three weeks, each time I planned to go shopping it snowed.
We were out of vegetables, milk, eggs, sugar, almost out of bread, and I had no snacks left for DH to munch on. There was one box of tissues left and that wasn’t a full one. Yes, it was time to shop. I dodged the impending snowstorm panic shoppers as I filled my list.
I pushed my cart into my favorite clerk’s line and joked with her about panic shoppers while she rang up my order. Another customer told us about how a friend of hers had stopped for milk on the way home from work before the last storm. (She has three small kids and was out of milk.) There was no milk in the case so she went to have a couple of other items checked out and the woman in front of her had eight gallons of milk. She practically begged the woman to spare her one for her kids. The woman rudely told her no. Geez, some people are real idiots.

Slip sliding away…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
What’s worse than having several inches of snow dumped on you? How about having freezing rain on top of it. Ah, yes freezing rain, this means a coating of ice over everything. The yard is a skating rink that neither the dogs nor DH and I appreciate.
Early yesterday morning, when DH took the dogs out as usual, he made the trip with Gavin safely but the trip outside with Patty was a real trip (or was that slip?) and fall. Patty, unencumbered by her daddy on the end of her leash managed to beat him inside. He, due to the ice coating everything, couldn’t get to his feet and had to crawl indoors.
He says that Patty thought that was great fun to watch and as he dragged himself in the door she thought it great fun to bounce around him and plaster his face with kisses. I don’t think he was amused but knowing Patty, she certainly was.
DH is a tad stiff and sore from his slip but none the worse for wear. He’s glad I wasn’t awake and nearby with a camera to catch the action. 😉

And then there was light…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
What difference a couple of working lights in the kitchen makes. Wow, I can actually see to work in there again. G and her husband were over Sunday; he climbed a ladder and replaced four fluorescent lights for me. DH couldn’t do it and my inner klutz came out when I attempted to get one end of the light in one side, then the other end in, the ladder wobbled badly, scaring the crap out of me, and I said to heck with it. For months, I’ve worked in dim lighting in there.
Would you believe the first words out of mouth when the lights went on were, “crap, now I need to clean.” Oh yeah, NOW I could see the dust and dirt I’d missed. Guess what I did yesterday? Uh huh, I cleaned. First thing I cleaned was the hutch we’d brought over from the MIL’s house since it was very dusty. Then I proceeded to scrub the rest of the kitchen except for the floor.
Why didn’t I do the floor? I didn’t do it because we’re having another snowstorm. The floor can wait until after the dogs and DH finish tracking more snow in.
I hope y’all have a sunny and warm day. I wish we were.

Snow, snow everywhere
Posted by doggonedmysteries
This is some winter. Forty-nine of the fifty states have snow right now. I wonder how often that has happened.
It’s snowing. It’s snowing a lot. I have to say, that not having to shovel it makes it look prettier than usual. The dogs didn’t want to go out. I had to boot them out the door for their last trip outside tonight. Gavin went a bit more willingly than Patty did. However, neither one stayed out any longer than was necessary. I don’t blame them. I didn’t want to be out there either. A hot cup of coffee tasted good after that.
It looks as though G and I won’t be going over to the MIL’s house tomorrow. We will wait until the roads are clear again. Cleaning out the house isn’t worth risking our necks over. There’s always next week.
I hope we don’t have too many more snowstorms. I need my hose to thaw out so I can add water to the pond. Spring can’t get here too soon to suit me.
Y’all stay warm and have a good day.
