March is National Multiple Sclerosis Education and Awareness Month

My husband was a police officer forced into an early retirement because he has Multiple Sclerosis. He was a police tactical firearms instructor and is a great and willing resource for me. He always encourages me to keep writing. We will celebrate our thirty-eighth anniversary in July of this year. His MS has gone from relapsing remitting to secondary progressive. Although walking is difficult for him, he still tries to do some of the yard work, thank heavens for riding mowers.
He had Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS) for a long time. His diagnosis changed several years ago to Secondary-Progressive MS (SPMS).
This is Bayer Health’s description of Secondary-Progressive MS (SPMS). In SPMS, symptoms worsen more steadily over time, with or without the occurrence of relapses and remissions. Before disease-modifying therapies became available, historical studies indicated that about 50% of people with RRMS progressed to SPMS approximately 10 years after their first diagnosis. Long-term data are not yet available to determine if treatment significantly delays this transition
(The picture of him at the top of this post is a few years old.)

EEKS I went and did it.

For those of you that don’t already know, I finally took the plunge and joined Facebook. I have been very reluctant to do so for many reasons. However, with the possibility of books going to publishers in the future, I’m told that it was a wise thing to do.
Those of you who are wise in the ways of FB will have to excuse me for a while as I learn the ins and outs of it. (Shut up, Dave.) I spent most of the night last night exploring and testing things out. I’m sure I’ll make many mistakes, but what better way is there to learn?
I will now post simultaneously on WordPress and FB. If you are reading this on FB, come over to my WordPress site and look around. There you will find a few samples from my works in progress. I have pictures of our dogs and gardens in there too.
Today I am going over to the MIL’s house and work again. Wish me luck on dealing with the house of horrors. I truly dread going back into the garage (AJ and I were in there on Sunday); there are far too many spider webs in there.

Has your writing become a cliché?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
At times, I enjoy reading cozies but I no longer am fond of the ‘cooking’ type of cozy. I find that when they end a chapter with a recipe that it jars one out of the story. I noticed that more and more ‘cooking mystery’ authors are doing too much of that of late. It destroys the flow for me. I see nothing wrong with putting all the recipes at the end of the book.
The fact is the entire premise has become a tired cliché. This makes me wonder how many other cozy styles have wandered down the same path.
How did Dame Agatha manage to keep her wonderful Miss Marple fresh and believable in all those books? Why is it that I can reread those books many times and still enjoy them and yet some of the more modern writers’ books are a once and done?
I hope that once my books are out there my readers will have the courage to tell me if they grow tired of my characters.

I said I’d think about it
Posted by doggonedmysteries
“Aw, please oh please oh please!” My muse pleadingly raised her hands in the air.
“You have to be kidding. You really want me to drag that old book out and work on it?”
“Why not? It’s been years since you’ve even looked at it. I bet you can do a quick rewrite and have it in top form in no time.” She hopped up from the chair she’d sprawled in and patted my shoulder.
“But why?”
“I think people will like your heroine. They’re ready for her now. She’s no angel, she’s tough, her language isn’t very pretty but she has something.”
“I dunno, all those rejections later, I don’t know if I’m ready for more, at least not on that book.”
My muse flopped back into the chair and swung her legs over the arm. “Will you at least think about it?”
“I’ll think about it.”

Note to self….
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Some days I’m writing even when I’m not sitting at the computer typing away. Scenes flash through my head along with fragments of dialogue. Gestational ideas need to percolate.
I grab a pen and write things down on a Post It, maybe two or three that I stick to my desk, computer, keyboard, lamp or anything that’s handy. I’ve had ideas hit me while cooking, sleeping, or even when I’m taking the dogs outside.
Hey, Patty get back here I need that note I stuck on your butt.
I have notes all over the house there isn’t a room in this house that doesn’t have a pad of notes and a pen handy. I also write notes to remind me of things I need to do. Those too are everywhere.
I drive DH and the dogs crazy at times but then they do the same to me so we’re even.

Get write right when you write
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I admit it. I have been goofing off the last couple of days. Instead of writing I’ve been reading. (It’s my opinion that reading makes one a better writer.) Some of the books I read were stunning and well written.
Other of the books I read could’ve had their writers spend more time reading. At the very least, they should’ve had someone read their books before they published them. Glaring spelling and grammar errors jumped out at me. One was so bad all I can think of is that writer did a lot of cut and paste and never read it through afterwards. It had too many disjointed paragraphs and sentences that made no sense at all.
When my books get out there, I do hope I am giving you the very best that I can do. I’d be ashamed to give you anything less.
Nothing makes me scream in frustration more when reading a book than to see careless errors.
Do NOT depend on your spell checker to catch all mistakes. There are words that sound alike but have completely different meanings. Take for example the words write, rite, and right. If, you aren’t sure what spelling is correct, do use a dictionary and look up the word.
Read, read, read, and reread your book. Then have others read it before you send it off.

My muse hates puns but I love them
Posted by doggonedmysteries
My muse and I had an argument today.
“Shouldn’t you add some scenery here?” She asked.
“Will it move the plot forward? No. Dialogue will.”
“But I love scenery.”
“I’m not dropping in a paragraph of description just to have my readers skim over it.”
“I wouldn’t skip it,” she replied.
“Then you are a rare reader indeed.”
She preened and smiled at the comment. “Yes, I am unique.”
“That reminds me of a bad pun.” I know she hates puns so I was ready.
“No, don’t tell me.”
“How do you catch a unique rabbit?”
“I don’t want to know.”
“Unique up on it.” I said and giggled.
She groaned, “Keep that up and I’m leaving.”
I went back to typing dialogue. “Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.”
She didn’t leave. Instead, she read over my shoulder. “Hey, that dialogue isn’t bad.”
“Told you.”

What I’m reading now
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I recently bought a two-volume book for my Kindle and in doing so discovered a new author I like. He is J. R. Rain and the books are Moon Dance and Vampire Moon. He’s cleverly mixed the vampire craze with a PI mystery. Check him out at http://www.jrrain.com/
I’m also re-reading a few classics. I just finished the Iliad and I’m currently reading the Odyssey. I’ll be downloading more classics in the near future.

Some who write say:
Posted by doggonedmysteries
“Sit your butt in your chair and write.”
Oh, if only it were that easy.
DH and the dogs vie for my attention especially at mealtime. Four in the afternoon Gavin starts to bug me. He pokes me with his nose, he stares at me, and he bows and barks. Patty dances and sings back up.
“It’s not time yet.”
“What’s for dinner?” DH asks.
“It’s not time yet. Can’t you see I’m trying to work?”
“Oh, I thought it was later.”
“That’s why you have a watch and half a dozen clocks around the house. So that you know what time it is.”
“I figured the dogs knew.”
“The dogs can’t tell time.” I reread what I wrote while he was talking. Hmm, not bad…and then my character can—
“Well, can you tell me what we’re having anyway?”
Typing frantically before I lose my train of thought I snap, “Food, you’ll like it.” I look up and brakes squeal—the train crashes.
I sit back, look heavenward, and the house adds its two cents by waving cobwebs at me from odd places.

Point of view, what is your preference?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I find I tend to write in first person. I also prefer to read books written in first person. Books written in first person tend to draw me in faster and keep my attention longer. They are difficult to put down because I become part of the story.
One of the free books I downloaded to my Kindle is in third person. It’s a fantasy and I hate to say it…but it doesn’t hold my attention. The book is easy to put down and walk away from it. Don’t get me wrong, there are many wonderful books written in third person however, this fantasy isn’t one of them. I guess it goes to show you that if you want to read a good book you have to pay for it.
Now dear readers it’s your turn. Which viewpoint do you prefer? In what viewpoint was the worst book you ever read written? The best?

Getting used to my Kindle
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I find my Kindle 3G easy to hold. It only weighs .2 ounces more than the cheaper Kindle and is as thin as a pencil. With the connectivity of the 3G and Wi-Fi, books download in mere seconds—amazing. So far, I’m sticking to free books because our budget is a tad tight now. I’ve downloaded six free books, read one, and am halfway through a second one. This is with taking breaks to play the free word game I downloaded, cook dinner, play with the dogs, write, and do laundry today.
I love that I can easily adjust the print size. I find a bit larger print keeps my eyes from tiring.
Gavin is not amused with it because I am reading and not paying constant attention to him. The dog thinks I have nothing better to do than cuddle and pet him. At least he hasn’t tried to snag the Kindle from my hand as he has books on occasion.
DH loves it because I don’t have to turn the light between our chairs on high to read. It is easy to read in low light.

A woman’s prerogative
Posted by doggonedmysteries
As a woman, I have the right to change my mind. As a writer, I owed it to myself to learn all I could about E-books and E-readers. At least that’s what an agent told me recently.
“You should really know everything you possibly can about E-books and E-readers. After all they aren’t going away, they are getting better.” She said.
I whined, “But what about book signings and the feel of a real book in your hands?”
“Don’t worry there will always be real books. However, E-books and E-readers will get your books out there to more people, younger people.”
The discussion went on for quite some time and by the end, I was still whining, but I figured that I’d better take her advice and look into the whole business.
I checked out all sorts of E-readers and then I bought a Kindle. It arrived yesterday around noon. I spent the rest of the day learning about it, playing with it, dressing it in a skin, and even downloaded two free books and a game.
I hate to admit it, staunch book fan that I am, but…I like it.
