Every year a dove nests here. For years they made messy attempts to but couldn’t make it work. Finally, several years ago, The Curmudgeon put that plastic shelf up for them.
Momma’s on her second nesting this year…
You all have a good one.
When I don’t take my camera along…

We saw a Grey Heron while on our walk yesterday. He was gorgeous! You might know I’d left my camera at home sitting on my desk. He wasn’t far from where we were walking and yet he didn’t move a muscle as we continued by him.
A little while later two cranes flew over us and followed the course of the river by air. I desperately wished I’d brought my camera.
Signs posted at all our city parks. “Dogs must be leashed at all times” and “clean up after your dog” seems pretty darned specific to me. Does It to you?
Three more dog walkers needed signs. One of whom I asked if he was going to clean up after his dog, we watched him watch his dog go. He and the other two had their dogs running loose too
Why do some people think the law applies to everyone but them? Those people give responsible dog owners a bad name. It’s no wonder that I don’t take my dogs to the parks to walk.

Garden news

Today a neighbor stopped over to check that three quarters dead branch on the magnolia tree. He used to work for a landscaping firm that did a lot of tree trimming. He says he can remove the branch for us no problem. Sometime after his 17 days of day shift or over a weekend, he’ll take care of it. That’s one weight off my mind. I had visions of that branch, heavily loaded with snow, crashing down on our shed this winter. Now I won’t have to worry.
We’re still picking tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. There are two different varieties of sugar baby watermelons and each have one fruit on the vines, I hope they ripen before the first frost.
The cardinals had nested in the magnolia the parents and several now fully-fledged young ones hang around the feeders most of the day. It looks as though two of the youngsters are males and three are females. We have a family of Downy woodpeckers that hang around in our yard and G’s.
I had to fill the hummingbird feeder today so even though I don’t see them often they are coming around. The small flock of goldfinches is enjoying the Echinacea seeds every day.
The cannas are continuing to bloom and they are now quite a bit taller than I am.

Gnasty gnats
Posted by doggonedmysteries
The last couple of weeks we have a plague of gnats. They swarm and bite not just the dogs but us too. When I ran the trimmer around the pond, the gardens, and along the fence those nasty bugs were biting the heck out of my ears. They drew blood and were worse than the mosquitoes. It’s a darned shame the bull frogs consider them too small to be an appetizer.
No, our frogs want to eat birds and nightcrawlers. One of the frogs, probably Goliath, has the mourning doves on heightened patrol at the waterfall. The birds have begun to use a lookout when they come in to drink. I haven’t seen any starlings stop by for quite a while.
When I sit on the little bench by the back door, I can see a dozen or so gold finches feasting on my coneflowers’ seeds. They arrive every afternoon around five and aren’t as skittish now as they were this summer. The cat bird joins them. From the far side of the cemetery I can hear the red tailed hawk yelling at the mowers. I can’t stay outside and enjoy the birds for long because the gnats discover me again.
