Hooked on DIY Network

Now that my TV gets it, I’ve become hooked on the DIY network.  It’s my late night background noise while I write.  Although at times, it does drag me away from the computer because it catches my interest.

DH and I had many plans of what we wanted to do with this house.  Only one ever came to fruition and that was the pond.  Maybe if we’d known sooner that his MS was going to kick his ass we would’ve jumped on those projects.

Now, instead I drool over ideas and projects I see on the show.  A deck or patio?  Oh, yes that would be nice.  To see the kitchen and front bedroom stripped of wood paneling and neatly wall boarded and freshly painted?  A pipe dream.

If any of those hosts want to come in here and do the work (free of charge) I’d let them.  Tap, tap, tap…is thing on?  Can you hear me out there?

How to repair a hole in a wall

There’s a hole in the wall behind Patty’s crate.

     How did that get there?

The idiot dog put it there.

     Sure, blame the dog.

Really, she did it.  No, she didn’t use a hammer or put her paw through it, she used her crate.

Patty is a high energy Bull Terrier.  Patty will run full tilt into her crate and slam into the back of it.  One of these days, I expect to find her unconscious in there with that I-meant-to-do-it look on her face.  The last time she ran full tilt into her crate, it hit the wall so hard that it knocked a hole in the plaster.  It’s not dry wall this is an old plaster and lath wall.

I will clear away any loose dust and plaster and undercut the edges.  I’ll dampen the hole and edges, fill it with patching plaster, not quite even to the wall, and then score the surface of the patching plaster.  Let it dry for 24 hours.  Then I’ll apply joint compound even with the rest of the wall.  This doesn’t have to be perfect since I painted the wall with textured paint, which I’ll apply after the joint compound is dry.

Have I done this before?  Oh, yeah.  Many times, between DH’s frequent falls and two high energy BTs I’ve become an expert.

Adventures in DIY Land…EEKS!!!

Before his MS caught up to him, Dear Hubby had many home improvement projects in the works.  Now he’s unable to do them so we’re stuck with a few unfinished DIY ventures.  Then there’s all the stuff around the house that needs repair work done.  It’s enough to send me screaming off into the wilderness.

Although I am capable of doing many things, lifting dry wall isn’t one of them, and we have two rooms that need it.  The last time I tried to lift some dry wall panels, I managed to get one about a foot off the ground before my back chimed in, “Are you stupid?  You sat in front of a computer for years and now you want me to help you lift that?  I’ll show you!”

OUCH!  I spent the next several days with a heating pad as my best friend.  My second best friend was the muscle relaxant my doctor prescribed.

Soon I’ll be climbing a ladder to do all the painting I need to do.  It’s not that easy when you have a fear of heights.  I get halfway up the ladder and my brain hits me with, “You’re going to fall.  Can’t you feel the ladder shaking?  Tell you what.  How about I hit your adrenals get them pumping and start your heart racing a little?”  There’s nothing quite like some cardio work and an adrenalin rush to brighten your day.
