So they say we’ll be getting snow…

Sometime in the wee hours of  this morning we’re to get a snowstorm.  I am not looking forward to it.  The one we had in October was plenty enough for me.  At least I have my winter boots by the back door so when the dogs need to go out I can switch from my flip-flops to my boots.

I had rather enjoyed the strange weather that was (so far) this winter.  Weeks of fifty degree days kept me from complaining.  Look out, because when the snow hits, it’s going to be bitch, bitch, bitch!  Hehehe.

I won’t say how the dogs will react since they always make a liar out of me when I do try to predict their behavior.

Hey, all of you who aren’t getting this weather, enjoy what you’ve got.  For those of you who are getting the snow, stay warm and drink some cocoa for me.  You all have a good one!  I’ll catch you later.

Day 5 Gavin’s recovery

Not a great day today.  I wish we could knock him out until the ear heals since he spent today being a royal pain in the tuckus.  I finally cut the arms off an old long underwear shirt and taped it over his ear to keep him from shaking his ears and trying to dig at it.

The collar of shame is useless this time since he figured out how to get out of it.  Yes, even with it attached to his collar he managed to get it off.

Oh, what I’d give for enough tranquilizers to knock an elephant on its ass.  I spent most of the day yesterday holding Gavin to keep him from messing with his ear.

Maybe Gavin will give his Daddy a nice birthday present today and leave his ear alone so it can heal.  I don’t see this being a great birthday for The Curmudgeon today.

Idiot dog is going to make me crazy

Why is that the dogs always wait until late at night or on a weekend to do something really stupid?  Gavin began shaking his head tonight and has somewhat opened his ear incision.

I have his whole head bandaged to keep him from shaking blood all over everything and hoping that the incision scabs over enough to keep things on hold until Monday.  The Emergency vet is sooo expensive.

     Guess who won’t be sleeping?

Oh, our new kitchen faucet arrived, now all I need is to have it installed.

Coming up…

Next week it’s The Curmudgeon’s birthday.  I’m not sure what we’re going to do for it.  Perhaps I’ll drag him out for dinner.

Next week I also have a cardiologist appointment, I hope he tells me I can stop the one medication that has given me such a dry cough.  Without it I’ll sleep better since it is the cough that now wakens me at all hours.

Gavin has an appointment on the 23rd to have his stitches removed.  It’s also G’s birthday, I need to do something real nice for her after all the help she gave me over at the MIL’s house.

Gavin’s recovery day 2

When The Curmudgeon got up, I went to bed trusting him to keep an eye on Gavin.  According to him, Gavin spent most of the day sleeping.  This is a good thing.  He did keep Gavin and Patty separated all day since he didn’t think he could manage them if she got too peppy and wanted to play with Gavin.

It turns out she was happy to have her Daddy to herself each time she was out of her crate and made no moves to pester Gavin through the crate door at all.

Once I finally woke up, The Curmudgeon was already down for his nap.  They did tire him out today and since Gavin was so good about his ear, he trusted him to leave it alone.  Something I wouldn’t have done.  Yes, I did scold him a tad.

I decided to give the dogs a chance to be together.  Gavin was out of his crate and I let Patty join him.  She gave his ear a couple of good sniffing and then left him alone.  She didn’t try to engage him in play so I’m guessing she knew he wasn’t up for it.

If all continues to go well, Gavin should have his stitches out on the 23rd.  Patty will be happy since I’m sure it is taking all her best behavior to keep from teasing him into playing with her.

Dog nurse

For the next several days I’ll be playing nurse to Gavin while he recovers from his ear surgery and tooth extraction and cleaning.  Poor baby is sore and we’ll have to watch him closely because of the stitches in his ear.

He came home starved and fussy.  We couldn’t get away with skipping his dinner–he insisted.  He only got a half portion though.  He did keep it down with no problem and I’m sure that by breakfast we’ll hear all about how stingy we were.

     Wish me luck.  😀

No food after 7… Oh, he’s going to scream!

You try sleeping in this thing!

At eight this morning, Gavin goes to the vet to get the hematoma on his ear repaired.  Instructions are no food after seven P.M. Monday night, no water after ten.

Gavin won’t be a happy camper when his breakfast doesn’t hit his dish.  (Digging out my ear plugs.)  He’s a screamer when he misses a meal.

The vet’s office always tells us no food until the next day but they don’t have to live with him.  He’ll eat because we won’t be able to stand the screaming  high pitched scoldy barking.

If I remember right, he’ll also be wearing the collar of shame (see picture above) for however long it stays in one piece.  Last time it was a whole day.  Wish us luck!

Parrot dogs…a new breed? LOL!

I have to laugh at these two, they will lie down in their crates but only Patty will go to sleep before the towels are dropped down.  Gavin will NOT sleep unless he’s covered.  He’s done this since he was 8 weeks old.  If we forget to drop his towel down over the door he’ll bark at us.

This happens twice a day here.  Once every afternoon when he says it is nap time and later when he wants to go to bed for the night.

Drop the towel and he’s snoring in minutes.  I love my parrot dogs.

Dogpile on Daddy!

Patty was snuggling with The Curmudgeon when Gavin decided to join them.  I had to grab the camera!  LOL!

Mom got some good shots

A little pupcorn?

My stomach told me that a little snacking was in order this past evening.  For some reason I decided that popcorn would do.  It’s been quite a while since I’ve made some.  It’s been even longer since I’ve made some while the pups were still awake.

Once I started the hot air popper going, I had two absolute idiot dogs in the kitchen.  The white dog danced around barking at the popper.  The brown one ran from kitchen to  living room and back again, all excited.  Goodness, I was sure the commotion would have The Curmudgeon awake and wandering down the stairs to see what was going on.  He must have been very tired because he never showed.

I had to hold the bowl above my head as I walked from the kitchen to the living room because two Bullies wanted it.  Next I had to fight for my seat in my chair they were determined they were getting some popcorn.

I let them watch and drool as I ate the first two bites.  I picked up a piece in each hand and threw them in two different directions and giggled as two dogs scrambled to get a piece before the other could.  (That’s why the two different directions.)  The pups got a little exercise and both of them relearned how to catch.

Eat a few pieces, throw a couple pieces, giggle…repeat.  I am easily entertained…

Hoping to avoid a vet bill

Gavin has a small hematoma in his good ear.  I took his collar off him to keep him from hitting the ear with his tags while he’s shaking his head.  I put an icepack on his ear sort of pinching the hematoma between the folded pack.

It hasn’t gotten any bigger so far.  If we can keep his head shaking to a minimum and ice it from time to time–he will only let me do it once a day–we might be able to avoid a vet visit, bill, and the usual stitching of the ear.  His other ear was stitched several years ago but that hematoma was huge compared to this one so far.

Keep your fingers crossed, he REALLY hates going to the vet.
