Out and about
Posted by doggonedmysteries
G and I went out to lunch, the first of two lunches out we’ll have this week, and probably the only meals out anywhere we’ll have for the rest of the month.
We went to Applebees because it is next door to Target. I enjoyed a spinach salad with chicken wrap and G had broccoli cheese soup and a chicken wrap. Lovely light lunches. And I have to mention our server Chris, he was a delight. We’ve had him serve us before and always have enjoyed him. The kid is a real hoot.
Target was our main agenda for the day.
We do love to do a little shopping there at least once a month. This time The Curmudgeon wanted a new DVD that came out yesterday so we were happy to oblige him.

Breakfast out
Posted by doggonedmysteries
The dogs had me up early yesterday. Again. This time I couldn’t go back to sleep.
When The Curmudgeon came down, I suggested we go out to breakfast. He liked that idea, very unusual for him. He hasn’t liked to eat out for a long time.
I decided to call G and see if she wanted to join us. She did.
We had a delightful breakfast. The Curmudgeon had banana walnut pancakes. G and I both had creamed dried beef on toast with home fries. Yep, we did it again. Same menu choice,
I guess that was why I couldn’t go back to sleep. We were meant to go out.

It was a good night for soup.
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Since we’re getting a new order in from Five Star Home Foods soon, dinner was a ‘clean some stuff out of the freezer’ sort of meal. Only this time I turned the stuff into a soup. I cleared out frozen veggies and chicken breasts.
I made a chicken tortellini soup. I used half a bag of sliced carrots, 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts cubed, a half bag of mixed soup veggies, half a bag of kale, chopped fresh onion and celery, some dried basil and oregano, turmeric, sea salt, pepper, frozen tortellini, and chicken broth.
It turned out quite tasty.
No, I didn’t give you any measurements because I didn’t measure.
You all have a good one!

Fall dinner–home made ham and bean soup
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Saturday, G and I went to the farmers market. I bought a very smoked ham hock. Sunday’s dinner was fresh ham and bean soup. Super smoky and delicious. I tend to use the simple recipe on the bag of navy beans. It never fails.

Yummy…I hope
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Yesterday G and I went to the farmers market. At one stand, I found a lovely chicken and had them split it for me.
Last night I brined it and put it in the refrigerator over night.
It is now on the grill with the smoker box going and we will eat around 6 tonight. Yum.
You all have a good one!

Squirrel 6 us 1
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Baited the Havahart trap with the tomato the squirrel stole off the vine, chewed on, and dropped as he tried to run up the tree with it tonight.
Damned thing, I hope he’s just dumb enough to go for it. He’ll find himself transported to a new life.
He’s almost completely stripped us of tomatoes. Makes me so mad since I had my heart set on enjoying them.

Let the tree rat wars begin again.
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Effing tree rats have ruined three very large and not yet ripe Black Krim tomatoes. Let the wars begin.
I bought chicken wire to enclose my two Black Krim tomato plants, leaving the third heirloom tomato plant to fend for itself. It is my hope that they, finding that plant easier to get at will leave my delicious Black Krims alone.
Little smirking tree climbing fancy tailed rats better look out, I gave The Curmudgeon permission to dig out his BB gun too.

Home made or boxed?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Recently I got into a discussion with some friends and thought I’d bring the discussion here.
My preference in the comfort food category of macaroni and cheese is home made, completely from scratch, using the sharpest cheddar cheese one can find.
Two of my friends said they prefer Kraft macaroni and cheese.
How about you? What do you like?
Boxed

or scrumptious?

Good food
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I should have taken my camera along to the farmers market. I would have all of you drooling on your keyboards at all the yummy foods there.
They have everything from health food to potato chips and candy. You can eat at several stands and the variety from which you can choose is amazing.
Some of my favorite places to stop for a bit of lunch are the Vietnamese booth, the Mediterranean booth, the soft pretzel stand, and the pizza stand.
I love the colors of the fresh fruits and veggies and the fragrance of fresh-baked goods and roasted chickens.
I always wonder how I can resist going every single week…

Time to try out the new crock pot
Posted by doggonedmysteries
A while back I’d put some country-style ribs in a dry rub for 48 hours and then put them in my crock pot to cook. That was the day my crock pot died. I had to throw out the ribs. Yes, I actually cried about it. Those ribs had started to smell real good right before the crock pot died. We had let them sit for hours in it without knowing that they were sitting in a dead crock pot. At the moment I have ribs sitting in a dry rub and they will be ready for the pot on Monday.
Today I have a lovely beef roast marinating in a Guinness, sweet soy sauce, Worcestershire, thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder solution. That will all be going in the crock pot with onions, potatoes, and carrots in a few hours and roasting for 8 to 10 hours. I’m hoping for tender and tasty.
I’ll let you know how it went. You all have a good one.
