Bits and bobs

While trying to figure out a post for today, I tossed aside many ideas for one reason or another. (No one wants another day of how I feel, I’m sure. If you do, I’m fine.)
The Curmudgeon was gone most of the day so there’s not much that he can bring to the table. (Well, not so much as gone as he had his truck inspected and when he got back he took a long nap.)
Does anyone else want to go on a Diners Drive Ins and Dives road trip with Guy Fieri? Man, watching the show drives me into a food frenzy. (Especially after starving to death the past few days.)

After the bug hits…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Wow, that was a nasty bug that knocked me down and out for the weekend. Today, I have kept down toast. That’s a baby step. Even being sick didn’t stop me from doing dishes and taking care of the dogs and The Curmudgeon…Yep, I knew what I was doing when I laughed at my doctor’s suggestion of ‘get plenty of rest.’
I need to go grocery shopping since, like an idiot, I put it off last week. Who knew I’d get sick? I do know of a few new things to add to my grocery list so I have them on hand. Things like Jello, broths, bouillon, all those ‘clear diet’ things you don’t always have on hand when you need them. I would have killed for some Jello yesterday.
Then, there are the bland diet foods that I need now. I don’t have them. (Slapping palm to forehead.) Duh, I haven’t gone shopping.
Yes, time to resupply my pantry with ‘sick’ foods. Just in case The Curmudgeon gets this bug, I’d better do it asap.
I’m hoping my bug retreats quickly and leaves me in peace. My butt still hurts from the shot… LOL!

Shhhh, don’t tell him.
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Since my heart attack, almost two years ago, I have completely changed my diet, stopped smoking, and am almost back to my normal exercise levels.
Do you think I could, in these two years, get The Curmudgeon to change his diet at all?
That would be a no. When I make suggestions or try to talk to him about it I get this response:
Yeah, he’s going to change isn’t he? Not this guy, no way!
Want to bet on that? He’s made some dietary changes. He doesn’t know he’s made them and don’t you dare tell him he has. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him, it will make him healthier. Sometimes we wives have to get sneaky.

Pizza anyone?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I have decided to add a variety of healthy pizzas to our diet, homemade pizzas. I have a pizza stone ordered and on its way and have a nice wooden peel picked out for my next order.
Why have I decided this? Well, I’ve acquired several pizza cookbooks for free on my Kindle and thought that over the summer I could use either my oven or my grill to make some tasty pizzas. I think it’d be interesting to grill them.
The Curmudgeon loves pizza and this may be a way to get him to eat ‘healthier’ foods where he might actually enjoy them.
When I was a teen, our family had a killer pizza recipe that is now lost to me. I’d sure love to find one similar to it among all these recipes.

No fresh veggies yesterday…but there’s always today

Plans to go to the gym yesterday fell through. When I called G, no one was home. I figured they were running very late at the grocery store. So much for the gym, the grocery store, and a stop at the farmers market on the way home. I thought maybe I’d do the grocery store and farmers market run a little after noon.
Later on, after I got busy doing a few things around the house, I looked at the clock, and I realized that by then it was too late for me to go to the farmers market and grocery store. I refuse to shop anywhere near three in the afternoon with all the mommies and their cranky kids and it was ten after three.
I’ll go to the farmers market and grocery store today. I need fresh veggies and a few other things.

Another sucky diet book…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I’m so glad I didn’t pay for it. It was a freebie on my Kindle. I really hate these so-called diet books that are nothing but a sermon and insane, difficult to follow instructions or formulas. OH, PLEASE!!!
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I pick up a diet book to find menus and meals that are healthy and weight reducing. I do not pick a diet book up to have a lecture on my health that I already know needs improvement. Um, if I wasn’t concerned about my health would I be looking at diet books?
I really don’t care why you wrote a book on dieting when you don’t include any menus or meals. I have enough on my mind. I do not have the energy or the time to figure out your crazy formulas.
I would kill to find the handwritten menus I have lost somewhere in my house, or something comparable. They were to a diet that actually worked like a dream. A very balanced diet that melted the pounds off me so nicely many years ago and kept them off for a very long time. I need those handwritten pages back…sob.
I’m going to tackle the file cabinet in the attic once again on the off-chance that I somehow missed the pages the last fifty times I searched it.
You all have a good one.

A new toy in the kitchen
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I ordered a bacon/grill press last week. It arrived yesterday. I tested it last night on our breakfast for dinner, dinner. I made sausage patties and French toast. These sausage patties are what we get from Five Star Foods. I love them but I never liked how they’d curl up. I’d have to snip them four or five times around the edges to keep them flat.
The press worked nicely. I am pleased, now I can’t wait to use it with my grill pan. Oh, the paninis and other goodies I will make!

Good food makes for a happy Curmudgeon
Posted by doggonedmysteries
It’s always a treat when my neighbor and best friend G does some baking because we get samples. We enjoyed some apple crisp for our dessert last night. Yum! It’s been a long time since I’ve made it. Therefore, this was an especially lovely treat since I didn’t have to work at it. 😉
Dinner was easy and quick too. We had open-faced hot roast beef sandwiches made with the leftover roast beef and gravy from Sunday.
There’s nothing like an all comfort food dinner. The Curmudgeon sure did enjoy it.

Our non traditional traditional dinner
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Our Thanksgiving dinner is a simple fare with only the two of us here. I’ll take turkey breast cutlets, pound them flat, lightly bread and quickly sear them. I have some frozen chicken gravy that I’ll heat to serve over the cranberry Stove Top Stuffing. We’ll have sautéed kale and whole berry cranberry sauce will top things off. Then I’ll thaw some slices of cheesecake for dessert.
I’m not sure if I’ll post on Thursday or not. We’ll see what happens.

BBQ ribs!!!
Posted by doggonedmysteries
A Facebook friend gave me a fabulous recipe for ribs starting with a wonderful dry rub and then a slow cooking method. Well, I used the dry rub, had the ribs in it for 10 hours. Then I put them into my crock pot with sliced onions under them and I poured a small amount of apple juice into the pot. I cooked them on high for two hours and then turned them to low for three hours. The last hour, I slathered them with BBQ sauce. They were as yummy as they look.

What is comfort food for you?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Some days you want a simple dinner and nothing fancy. That was us last night. Comfort food. I made grilled cheese with bacon sandwiches and cream of tomato soup. We couldn’t believe how well it hit the spot for us.
We had so many large and somewhat fancy dinners all week, that was a nice change. Fewer dishes to wash made it real nice after having to wash many dishes and pots and pans all week.
I am sorely tempted to make simple meals all weekend to give me a break.
Comfort food, I think we all crave it most at this time of year. What is comfort food for you?
