Thank you for your patience

We had HORDES of kids come Trick or Treating.  They arrived promptly at six and continued to inundate us until after eight.  I had no time to grab the camera and get pictures this year.

However, I did get some pictures of the decorations during a lull.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get a good one of the Zombie in the barrel.  The best laid plans and all that.

After the Trick or Treating finished, Little D’s birthday cake was a great hit and she had a good time.  Her mother enjoyed the unusual welcome into the neighborhood.

They can has gummies

Occasionally my sweet tooth gets out of hand and demands I scarf down something sweet.  Today was one of those occasions.  Fortunately, I have a ton of Halloween candy on hand.  I could pick and choose, but thought I’d best stick with something less calorie laden than some of those oh so rich chocolate caramel bars.

I spotted a large bag of snack-sized bags of gummy spiders, mummies, and monster shapes.  Ah, not only could I curb my sugar craves, but I could also set up the ice cubes I wanted to make for our party.

Once I had the spooky gummies in the ice cube trays and had them back in the freezer I was ready to indulge myself on what was left in one little bag.

I curled up in my lounge chair, sat back, and began to chew on one.  The next thing I knew I had a dog’s head on each knee.  Two pair of triangular black eyes stared into mine.  I tried to ignore them as I popped a second gummy into my mouth.

Gavin and Patty know all about gummies they love them and will drool like crazy as soon as they smell them.  By the third gummy, they had my knees soaked.  I looked in the bag and there were two little gummy spiders left.  Gavin and Patty will gulp things down without tasting them.  However, when it comes to gummies they chew and chew and chew them.

“Can we has the last two gummies?”  Those eyes and all that drool….

I am weak.  I am a big softie.

Miscellaneous things

I’ve had my blucigs for almost two weeks now, and in that time, I’ve only smoked four regular cigarettes.  That’s quite a big accomplishment for me.

I replaced my dead fog machine yesterday.  I have far too many enablers.  😉

G has Little D’s Halloween birthday cake all figured out.  She’s making a sheet cake cemetery.  I finally caught Little D’s mother R today to ask how many candles we should put on the cake—a detail we’d forgotten.  DUH.

While driving yesterday G and I noticed that many of the trees around here have donned their brightly colored fall fashions.

The pups are enjoying the chilly weather and are so full of energy they’ve been chasing each other around the house like maniacs.  It’s a wonder there’s a stick left standing here.  Everything in the curio cabinet has wandered to one side from the thundering herd’s floor rattling romps.

You all have a good day.  If you live where you actually have a pretty fall, do try to get out and enjoy the colors.

Spare us from the food police

Another major city is trying to introduce a new ‘eating healthier’ food regulation for restaurants.  Good grief, spare us from the food police.  Sure, it’s true we have an obesity problem in this country but for heaven’s sake don’t go regulating everything we eat.

When we go out to dinner, an extremely rare event, I want what I want for my meal.  I don’t care if it’s high in fat.  I’m dining out to enjoy myself, to consume something I don’t make at home, and not have to cook.

I’d say that out of the 365 days in a year we go out for dinner maybe ten times.  This year, I’m not so sure we made it out anywhere near that many times.  So please don’t tell me I shouldn’t eat that luscious cheesecake they have on the menu or indulge in that butter heavy sauce I never make at home.  Don’t tell me not to have a medium rare steak, if I want one I’ll have it.  Dining out is supposed to be a pleasure.

What would make my dining experience more pleasurable?  That’s a whole other post…

The frost absconded and the green tomatoes fried

The other night there came a dire weather prediction.  Possible frost!  I nipped out to the garden with shears and a basket.  I cleaned all the tomatoes, ripening and green ones, from the vines.  The last two eggplants joined them in the basket.  We didn’t get the frost and now I have a large basket of green tomatoes on my table.

Last night for dinner, I took advantage of having green tomatoes on hand.  I sliced them, dusted them with seasoned flour, dipped them egg then a seasoned cornmeal and breadcrumb mixture, and fried them to a lovely golden brown.  I placed them on a cookie sheet and kept them warm in the oven while I cooked the rest of our dinner.

Which, since I’d already headed down south with the tomatoes, and had a hot frying pan ready, made me make a quick decision to turn DH’s hamburger steak and my steak into chicken fried steaks.  Well, then when the steaks were done, I had to make redeye gravy didn’t I?

At least I stopped there and didn’t add mashed potatoes.  We would’ve burst had I made them too.  As it was, we were full.

She wouldn’t trade birthdays with me

We invited our new neighbor R and her daughter to come over for the post Trick or Treat night dinner at my house.  When I found out that R’s daughter (little D) had Halloween for her birthday, I offered to trade birthdays with her but she said no.  Darn it.

Little D is now excited to be coming over to a party.  Knowing that it is little D’s birthday, G, who normally makes the dessert, is going to make a Halloween themed birthday cake.  We’ve been scouring the net for ideas.  Maybe our trip to Spirit Halloween this Thursday will give us some more ideas or, at the very least, spooky cake decorations.

I’ve already wrapped a small gift for our special birthday guest.  Gee, surprising little D is going make our Trick or Treat night party twice as much fun as it usually is.

I think I’m almost as excited as little D.

I was disappointed to find that there aren’t Halloween birthday cards, only plain old Halloween cards.  I’m sure that little D isn’t the only person to have Halloween for their birthday.

Garden news

Today a neighbor stopped over to check that three quarters dead branch on the magnolia tree.  He used to work for a landscaping firm that did a lot of tree trimming.  He says he can remove the branch for us no problem.  Sometime after his 17 days of day shift or over a weekend, he’ll take care of it.  That’s one weight off my mind.  I had visions of that branch, heavily loaded with snow, crashing down on our shed this winter.  Now I won’t have to worry.

We’re still picking tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers.  There are two different varieties of sugar baby watermelons and each have one fruit on the vines, I hope they ripen before the first frost.

The cardinals had nested in the magnolia the parents and several now fully-fledged young ones hang around the feeders most of the day.  It looks as though two of the youngsters are males and three are females.  We have a family of Downy woodpeckers that hang around in our yard and G’s.

I had to fill the hummingbird feeder today so even though I don’t see them often they are coming around.  The small flock of goldfinches is enjoying the Echinacea seeds every day.

The cannas are continuing to bloom and they are now quite a bit taller than I am.

September is here already?

I can’t believe it summer is already ending.  Wasn’t it just Spring?

I picked the last cantaloupe I don’t think we’ll get any more from the vines this season.  I do think we may have some watermelons before the first frost though.  The next wave of tomatoes is starting to ripen.  Another day or two and I’ll be making BLTs again.

The ruby throated hummingbirds are becoming regulars at the feeder and the cannas.  The cardinals, woodpeckers, and sparrows are now sharing the feeders with two parakeets and a cockatiel that occasionally comes in.  It is startling to see them at first.

Our toad, Mr. Toadamus is growing larger and must be finding plenty of bugs to eat because he’s quite fat.  I miss the frogs I will have to buy some tadpoles in the spring unless the neighbor’s son finds some on one of his landscaping jobs and brings them home.

The hawk family is still around.  I could hear them up in the cemetery when I was outside today.

There are two new stray cats in the neighborhood.  I chased one of them out of the yard when I discovered him napping on the bricks along the side garden.  It’s a good thing I was out alone and the dogs didn’t discover him.  All hell would’ve broken loose.

A simple summer meal

I’m always looking for quick and tasty summer meals.  (Especially things that I can make with leftovers.)  One of my favorites is my curry chicken salad.  It’s simple because I use left over store-bought rotisserie chicken to make it.  I buy those once in while when I know I’ll be too tired to cook when I get home from grocery shopping.  With only two of us, we have at least a half a chicken leftover when we’re done.

You have to understand that I seldom measure things when I cook.  I can give you the ingredients but you’ll have to make it to your own taste.

Leftover chicken cut up into bite-sized pieces, golden raisins (a handful), chopped celery one or two stalks, 1 small chopped onion, one sweet cherry pepper seeded and chopped, enough Miracle Whip to moisten everything, curry powder to taste (I use approximately 1 ½ to 2 teaspoons.)  Mix thoroughly and chill for at least two hours.

Serve on a bed of lettuce with tomato wedges.  DH loves this.  It’s also good as a sandwich filling.

Hey, Squirrel there’s a contract out on youse

If you can climb trees and aren’t squeamish about taking out a few squirrels, have I got a job for you.  The squirrel pulled a daylight raid on the tomatoes and dared, DARED to nibble on some of my heirloom tomatoes.  It didn’t pull them from the vine.  No, it chewed a bit here on one and a bit there on another.

I picked all the ripe and almost ripe tomatoes I could find.  Later, the danged tree rat left a half eaten half green tomato right where it knew I’d walk just to show me it could get at them any time.  I think it’s teaching its children to go after my tomatoes too.

I guess I need to take out a contract on the tree rat and family.

“Hello, is Mr. R. T. Hawk?”

     “Yeah, that’s me.”

“I need to hire you.  I’m having this problem with a squirrel.”

     “It’s just the one?”

“Well, not exactly.  I think there’s a nest of them.”

“Hmmm, young tree rats are quite tasty…um…er…I mean, I’ll do the job for you on the cheap.”

“Thank you.  I hope you can do it before all my tomatoes are gone.”

     “No problem.”

In the garden with DH

At dinner last night, I told DH that the large cantaloupe has suddenly begun to ripen.  “Another day or two and we’ll have some for dessert,” I told him.

Despite the heat, DH came out later to join me in the garden.  He climbed onto his mobility scooter and went to check out the melon patch.  “That melon sure looks good.  It’s much bigger than the other four.”

“I lifted it and it is hefty.  I can almost taste it.”  I walked alongside him, and pointed out to him which tomato plants were which—Beefsteak, Big Boys, and the heirlooms.

He drove over to the back porch and checked out the potted plum tomatoes.  “Think I can pick a few of these for my Mom?”

“Those aren’t ripe enough.  I already picked some for her they’re on the kitchen counter.  Just the plum tomatoes and the Beefsteak mind you, don’t you dare take my heirlooms.”

“She likes the plum tomatoes the best.”

“Good, that means you can leave the Beefsteak too.”

     He laughed.  “You are bad.”

“Yeah, but can I help it that I love tomatoes?”

Some days other things take priority over writing

I try to write every day.  Some days I do more writing than other days.  Today was one of those other days.  The garden was screaming for a weeding and the weather was cool enough to do it comfortably.  I couldn’t wait another day because we are expecting more humid and hot weather tomorrow that will last another week.

Then G came over and we roasted the Ancho and poblano peppers on the grill.  We popped them into a plastic bag for fifteen minutes and all but two peeled easily.  G went home with half the peppers for her freezer.

Yesterday, I picked two of the heirloom tomatoes and decided to make BLTs for dinner again.  I’m so glad I did.  Those tomatoes may be ugly looking but the flavor is marvelous.  It was so good that as soon as I finished my dinner I ran the second tomato over to G.  She had to taste it.

I got there in time for her to serve it with their dinner.  Later she phoned to rave about it.  I will plant them again next year.  There are quite a few on the plant but they aren’t ripe yet.  The Big Boy and Beefsteak tomatoes are also beginning to come in I picked two today.  DH asked me if there were any plum tomatoes, he could take over to his mother.  I brought in a whole basket full for him to choose from and took the rest to G.
