Enjoying the fruits of my labor
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Today G and I will roast Poblano peppers on the grill. Then after we peel them, we’ll bag them for our freezers. I have a large basket full of them all from the one plant in a pot with two other types of peppers.
The cucumber vine expired yesterday. A darned shame, I’ll certainly miss the fresh cucumbers. I did have quite a few and gave away many. They made the best cucumber salad. I tried two recipes for the creamy cucumber salad I remembered from my childhood visits to the family farms. I was searching for one similar to one my Aunt B served. I loved that salad. Both recipes I tried were wonderful but the second one was very true to my memory. I’ll plant cucumbers again next year.
I now have five cantaloupes growing. One is huge and makes the ones I saw in the supermarket look like minis. I drool over it every day. I am dying for it to ripen. There’s one watermelon on the vines. I picked the other one too soon so I intend to ignore this one for a while.
The Big Boy and heirloom tomatoes are beginning to ripen. We had wonderful BLTs for dinner the other night using a Big Boy tomato that was the first to ripen. I picked two huge heirloom tomatoes yesterday.

Garden gossip
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I should have waited another week to pick the watermelon. It wasn’t ripe. I do have another one growing. Maybe this time I’ll know better. I don’t know if I’ll try growing them again next year or go for a small seedless variety.
The tomatoes are turning red now that we’ve had a few cool nights. In another day, at least two will be ready for picking. Next week I can harvest the two eggplants in the back garden. Yum, fried eggplant is one of my favorites. The first one I’ll fry and the next one I’ll grill. Yeah, sometimes I need to cook healthy stuff. DH will only eat them fried so I’ll share the grilled ones with G. There will be many more to pick after that because the potted eggplant plant is loaded with them. (Next year all the eggplants will go into pots.) G and I can enjoy some moussakka and other dishes with the others since DH quickly tires of eggplant. He can have hamburgers or something.
Even after giving a lot away, I have so many sweet Hungarian and banana peppers I’ve begun to put them in almost everything I cook. They are so mild in flavor you hardly can tell they are there. Now the cherry peppers, Anchos, poblanos, and pimento peppers are starting to ripen. It’s a good thing I love peppers.
I have one good-sized cucumber in the fridge and a gazillion tiny ones on the vines. Last night I cut one cucumber into strips and munched them down, they made a lovely fresh, light snack.

I will pick the watermelon soon
Posted by doggonedmysteries
The sugar baby watermelon is almost ready to pick. Yes, so far we have just the one on the vines. The little yellow baby watermelon, which I’d hoped would compete with the sugar baby, died on the vine. With only one melon from two vines, it hardly seems worth the planting. We do have several cantaloupes growing nicely. I’ve had success with them before.
We will have no lack of eggplants, cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes since all the plants are producing well so far. Right now, I’m eagerly waiting for the peppers that are supposed to turn red to do so, and for the tomatoes to ripen. The eggplants are growing like crazy. One plant has four little ones and the other two have three each. Soon G and I will both be serving fried eggplant. She was over here today drooling over the prospects.
I had almost forgotten the rosemary I’d planted near the pond last year. I will have plenty to dry since the plant is doing very well even after the freeze damage from the winter. The English lavender I picked and hung last month is dried and ready for use in whatever I want. The variegated lavender plant is starting to bloom. The scent is milder than the English lavender.

Caterpillars and butterflies
Posted by doggonedmysteries
When I was quite young, my father gave me his well-worn, dog-eared butterfly book. I have very little that was his so the book is highly treasured by me. We loved looking up caterpillars and butterflies when we saw them.
Tonight, I discovered that my bronze fennel has several caterpillars snacking on it. I grabbed the book, looked them up, and they are swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. I won’t kill them. Swallowtails are such lovely butterflies. I hope the little guys hang around long enough to change into their winged beauty. Who needs fennel when you have swallowtails to look at?
This week we’ve had a few days of much needed rain. South of us, they had quite a bit of flooding. We were lucky here. My garden is happy and I’m happy because I haven’t had to water.
The first sugar baby watermelon is almost ready to pick. I can’t wait! DH’s hand is the one holding the cucumber in the pictures from yesterday’s post. A few curious people asked whose hand it was. The cucumber measured 9 inches long with the wide end having a circumference the same measurement.

Days of record-breaking triple-digit temperatures
Posted by doggonedmysteries
We need rain. We haven’t had any for weeks. The heat is making my garden produce like crazy. However, it wouldn’t be doing that if I didn’t water every day.
So far, I’ve harvested nine banana peppers, five Hungarian sweets, a large patty pan squash, and one lovely cucumber that I shared with G. I’m keeping my eye on two sugar baby watermelons that are growing rapidly. I’m also hoping that two won’t be all I get from the vines.
We finally have a couple of tiny cantaloupes going and the tomato plants are loaded with green tomatoes. The tomato plants in the back garden are taller than I am.
I have two very AC spoiled dogs. They only want to go out when they absolutely have to go. I can’t say that I blame them this heat has been miserable. DH, the dogs, and I have stayed indoors as much as possible. I hate this because I normally spend my summer outside as much as possible.
When they coined the saying, “the South shall rise again,” I don’t think this is what they meant. This heat can go back down south where it came from.

Updates and a Happy Birthday wish
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Record heat here today and it was far from pleasant. Normally I enjoy summer but we’ve had two major heat waves already and it’s barely into July. We are going to have more records broken this week according to the weather reports. If I wanted to live in the south I would, but I don’t.
My neighbor finished painting the shed today and it looks brand new. All is painted except for the doors, which we told him to leave alone. DH wants to straighten out some dents that he put in them and then we’ll paint them.
Happy Birthday Chuck! Hope you have a nice birthday, Sweetie! Our dear old friend Chuckles has tacked on another year today.
On a gardening note: I found three little watermelons on the vines today. The cucumbers are getting larger another week or two and I might have some in a salad. I harvested more banana peppers. There are a few nice patty pan squash coming along, finally. No cantaloupes yet, the one or two I thought we might have died teensy. I’m guessing they weren’t properly pollinated could be because the male and female flowers were out of sync but they seem to be blooming together now. I hope that means we will have fruit to enjoy. There are now dozens of green tomatoes on the tomato plants, yippee!

Holey pepper Batman
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I check the growth of my veggies every day. Yes, I’m impatient for them to ripen. So far it’s bugs two, me one. The bugs have managed to destroy one patty pan squash and an Ancho pepper. I’d been eyeing up that pepper every day since it was a blossom. By the time it grew to the size of my thumb, some bug managed to nibble a large hole into it.
I declared war. At night I haunted the garden by flashlight, picking bugs off the plants and depositing them into a jar filled with soapy water. I rubbed the same mixture onto the tiny peppers every night. Now I have quite a few nice sized peppers that will soon be ready to pick and they have no holes in them.
The melon and cucumber plants are also bug free now and growing with wild abandon. I have pea sized watermelons and cantaloupes on the vines. There are enough baby cucumbers out there to choke a horse or fill a large gherkin pickle jar.
There will be at least three eggplants since that’s how many blossoms we have today. It makes me glad that I have my mother’s moussakka recipe. That is a real treat.

Cucumber bugs in the melon patch
Posted by doggonedmysteries
It’s time to buy some insecticidal soap. I found cucumber bugs nibbling on my cantaloupe plants tonight. However, they are leaving the cucumber plant alone, which makes one wonder why the have the name cucumber bugs. I’d rather they’d leave my melon plants alone thank you very much.
Since I didn’t have any insecticidal soap on hand, I picked off the bugs and dropped them into a jar of hot soapy water. It killed them. I may have to continue this method for a few days. Right now, it looks as though there aren’t many in my veggie garden. I checked the potted veggies too and they seem to have escaped any bug damage.
My neighbors must think I’m crazy when they see the light from my flashlight bobbing around the yard at all hours. Although, if I hadn’t been checking plants at such an odd hour I might never have seen which bugs were snacking on my plants.
I am pleased to see so many little cucumbers and peppers on the plants. All the tomato plants have flowers, there are a few little patty pan squash growing, the eggplants have flowers now, and I have a few teensy acorn squash. Now all I need to see to make my heart go pitty-pat would be some cantaloupes and watermelons starting.

Surprise! A new look.

I thought it was time for a change. I hope you like it. One thing I noticed was the print is larger, which I like. However, it is lighter, which I don’t like.
I may have to play a little.
The Blogrolls are now on the bottom of the page along with everything else that isn’t a post. Not sure if I like that, but we’ll see.
This is going to take some getting used to. I hope you all like the changes. If not, let me know. I do want your opinions.

Garden update
Posted by doggonedmysteries
We’ve had enough rain to get the veggies and melons off to a great start. I have tiny peppers on most of the pepper plants. The tomato plants all have flowers now. I have to go out and find another sugar baby water melon plant because I foolishly bought only one and should have purchased two. The one I have is growing like crazy but without another to cross-pollinate I doubt I’ll get any fruit.
The eggplant plants have tripled in size but no flowers yet. I finally have dill growing tall and happy without the nasty earwigs chewing the plant down to the roots this time. Planting it in the pot worked well. The squash plants are loaded with flowers and a couple of them have teensy squash on them. The bush cucumber has flowers but no sign of any cukes yet. I’m not very certain that the plant was marked correctly because the plant certainly isn’t a bush.
G gave me some cannas the other day and I planted them. I hope they come up. The black elephant ears are beginning to look good. The ones in the pot are bigger than the ones in the garden.

How does your garden grow?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I’m pleased to say that all the tomato plants I put in have tripled in size and the plum tomatoes have blossoms. All of the pepper plants are growing tall and are loaded with flowers. This is the first time I’ve planted dill that the danged earwigs didn’t eat it to the roots within days. I guess planting it in a pot was the secret. The fennel plant looks good too.
There’s a lovely flower blooming on the patty pan squash and there are other buds a plenty. The sugar-baby watermelon vine has quadrupled in size and I do believe that also has buds. The acorn squash, the cucumber, and the cantaloupe are growing fast no buds yet but they’ll get there.
I don’t see any change in the lemon grass but at least it’s alive. I planted half of my black elephant ears in the pond garden and half in a pot. The ones in the pot are growing faster.
All of the new iris I planted are doing well and so are the other flowers. My oriental lilies are blooming. The stargazers are getting tall and have plenty of buds. I have a ton of coreopsis even after giving a bunch away to other gardeners along with some other iris I had to split. The day lilies have started to bloom. I took some pictures but have to download them.
