Lazy tonight…garden pictures

I played with the camera today

An odd weather day

It rained all around us yesterday but not a single raindrop fell in our neighborhood.  I had to water the vegetables.

I harvested six large cucumbers and a jalepeno pepper.  There’s another variety of hot pepper out there that has one almost ready to pick.  I wish the tomatoes were ready, but they’ll be a while yet.

Two of the five eggplants have blossoms.  I look forward to them since this time I bought different several varieties.

I hope you all have a good day!

Good news and more

I’ve already had some inquiries into items we have listed for the house clean out on Craig’s list.  It would be exciting to have many people show up and buy, buy, buy.  We sure do want to have the house empty, empty, empty so the painters can come.

Yesterday I spent the day attempting to catch up on a few household chores.  DH is happy that he has clean clothes.  The fish are happy now that they’ve had their filters backwashed and fresh water added to the pond.  The pups were thrilled that they had me to tease and harass non-stop all day.

The gardens are happy since I watered.  I do need to buy some mulch so they don’t dry as fast as they have been.  Once I’m done over at the MIL’s house, I will do that.

A little rain for the gardens

It rained last night so I went outside afterwards to check the gardens.  We could’ve used more.  I’ll probably have to water again today.  We have several small cucumbers and eight tiny tomatoes.  Now if only the eggplants would begin to produce.

While I was out there, I managed to startle one of new frogs.  He was out of the pond and hunting near our shed.  These frogs are as quick on land as they are in the water.  There’s plenty of good cover by the shed and he took advantage of it.  He was gone in a flash.

I do need to take the camera out and get some garden shots.  I’ve neglected taking pictures so far this year and missed the Iris and lily blooms.  Now the new day lilies are in bloom, the tomato plants cucumbers, and eggplants are growing quite large.

Where did that clerk go?

Woo wee, we had another humid and hot day today.  I got out and enjoyed it.  I dug out the pitchfork and turned the soil by the back fence.  Then later, when the sun was off the area, I planted four more tomato plants, two cucumber plants, and three different types of eggplant.  That means I have five different types of eggplant in the ground now.  Two are in a pot along the side of the house.

I made a run over to Home Depot, which was not the smartest thing to do today.  I struggled with and got my bags of potting soil into a cart but couldn’t find anyone to help me with the mulch.  There wasn’t an orange apron to be seen anywhere.  Soon, I was too hot and tired to care.  I paid for the potting soil, and spray foam insulation for the MIL’s house, and left.

I can go elsewhere for my mulch where they actually are eager to help you and will even load the mulch into the car.  Sorry Home Depot you aren’t service oriented and I need help.  I can’t load that many heavy bags into my car by myself.  After loading two bags, I’m shot.

Another peek into my garden

It’s amazing how a dozen tadpoles can so cleverly disappear into the pond.  They hide so well it’s a rare thing for us to spot one.  I did spy one hiding in the river tonight.  I can’t wait for them to become frogs.  It’ll be a real treat to have green frogs living here instead of the bullfrogs we’ve had so often.

G has a bullfrog in her pond.  He’s been there several years, probably because he’s not as dumb as ours were.  Ours went walk about and several were run over by cars in the alley between our house and the cemetery hunting grounds.  Hers stays in their yard, catches starlings, and completely grosses her out by leaving the dead birds floating in the pond.  He seems to enjoy the EEK factor with her.

Our new Koi seems to be settling in well.  It’s going to take some time before he is as big as the six girls he swims with now.  I keep saying he because I am desperately hoping this one is a male.

I still have a bunch of plants to get into the ground even though I have planted some every day so far.

I love this weather

It was hot outside yesterday and the dogs are quite spoiled by their Daddy’s need for air conditioning.  Patty spent the day sprawled out on the couch and Gavin alternated between his chair and the floor in front of the air conditioner.

I spent most of the day outside planting some of my flowers and veggie plants and working on the pond.  I only came in to rehydrate and take the dogs out to pee.  Well, it was more like dragging the dogs out.  They didn’t want to leave the air conditioning.  DH and the dogs think I’ve lost my mind.  I hate to tell them that it took a walk a long time ago.

I’ll be out working on the garden again today.  I need to weed along the back fence and get the rest of the tomatoes planted there.  Then on Tuesday, I need to buy more potting soil so I can put flowers in the pots out front and in the wrought iron stand that I brought home from the MIL’s house.

They MADE me do it

The expression heard often yesterday by my dear friends was, “Why did I let you drag me here?”   G, her husband, and I went off on a money-spending spree (for me, not for them).  They took me to a bulk goods store they love to go to and I went over board–there was so much there I wanted to bring home.  The spices alone (cheap!) made me go hog-wild.

If that wasn’t bad enough we then stopped at our favorite garden shop where, once again, I managed to spend like a drunken sailor on shore leave.   As I piled more flowers on my cart, I said once again, “Why did you drag me here?”  As if, I went along with them kicking and screaming.  Yeah, sure I did.  They had to hog tie me to take me along.  Now about that swampland in Florida you wanted….

Then we went to the pond shop.  (No, no, don’t make me go in there!)  Damn it, he had two black Koi…now he has one and so do I….  I found green frog tadpoles for the pond and yep, brought home a dozen of them.

Next time they invite me to go along on a jaunt, DH should handcuff me to the desk.

Thanks Mother Nature that was a nice gift

After so many dreary days of rain, it was nice to see sunshine today.  I managed to get outside and plant a few of my cannas.  It’s amazing how many places I don’t have room to plant this year.  I guess this means I won’t spend as much at the nursery next week as I normally do.  My list has whittled down to veggies and (if I can find them) two more black iris plants.  Only one of mine made it from last year.

Around six this evening I happened to be out on the front porch when we had another quick rainstorm pass through.  I grumbled and then looked off to the south and what should I see but a gorgeous double rainbow.  Who cares that it rained again.  The rainbow made up for it.  That’s what I call eye candy.

More garden pictures

Since fishing was a bust yesterday I worked in the garden until dark.

April’s weather teases us

It never fails, this is the month that gives us many promises of warmth and sun, and then it snatches it away.

The magnolia is in full bloom, what few tulips I have left are opening, and the daffodils are about finished.  The old-fashioned bleeding hearts are blooming as are the grape hyacinth.  The yard is beckoning me.  “Come play, come play!”

If only the weather would cooperate and warm up enough.  A frost warning might have my magnolia tree all brown by the time I get up today.  I hope the frost stays north of us.

I had to stop putting out year round suet for the birds because the tree rats were raiding it and leaving nothing for my feathered friends.

The hummingbird feeder is up and I hope it will attract some more this year.  I had so much fun watching them last year.

I can’t wait to set up the hammock.  However, I think it will have to wait until next month.
