Happy New Year!
Posted by doggonedmysteries
A toast to my dear readers…
May most of your wishes be granted.
I’d never say all, for a person needs to dream.
Good health.
Long life.
May the love of friends and family warm you.
Smell the roses.
Dance as if no one is looking.
Sing with joy.
Keep your feet on the ground and your head in the clouds.
And please keep on coming back here.

Ten resolutions
Posted by doggonedmysteries
With the New Year fast approaching, I thought I’d write down 10 New Year resolutions I intend to keep.
- When Dear Hubby is having a bad day I will try harder to make things more comfortable for him
- I will tell my loved ones ‘I love you’ often
- I will remember to seize the joy in life
- I will forget resentments, anger, and hard feelings and release them to the winds
- I will walk more
- I will take time to smell the roses even though they make me sneeze
- When the neighbors get on my last nerve, I will find something constructive to do rather than b**ch about it.
- I will eat more veggies and fruit
- I will speak my mind
- I will take time for me and write more
What are your New Year’s resolutions?

Santa’s little helpers
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Sometime around 11:00 tonight I’ll take the pups for a walk. First I’ll walk one around the block to the east of us and then I’ll walk the other to the west.
What makes these walks special? The dogs will wear sleigh bells. Any children still awake will have the thrill of hearing Santa pass by. I do this every year. In fact, I’ve done this for 36 years.
It’s a hoot because I’ve heard about ‘Santa’s Bells’ for years from parents and kids. They’ve yet to figure out where they come from. 😉
Have a Merry and a Happy everyone!
The two pups enjoyed their reindeer walk. However, of the two I think Patty was the one who enjoyed it the most. I’ve never seen her trot so happy or proud–she loves the bells. She extended the walk by a couple of blocks. Gavin had fun since he ran into a young woman who thought he was very clever to be wearing bells but he didn’t want to walk as far or as fast as his sister did.

Puppies and kittens for Christmas—not a good idea
Posted by doggonedmysteries
There’s nothing more stressful to a young animal than to arrive in a new home smack dab in the middle of the holiday confusion and excitement. For quite a few years, I managed a small pet store. We specialized in purebred kittens. Around Christmas, the owner would push the sale of them and offered to stay late on Christmas Eve so they could be picked up then. I protested his zeal the first year I worked there and managed to get him to change his policy a bit. We still sold the kittens but the new policy saved the babies from the stress of the holidays.
I talked my boss into holding the Christmas gift kittens until after Christmas. So what if they stayed with us a couple days longer? Instead of taking the new pet home for the holidays, our customers would present their gifts to the intended people in a different way. Some would buy all the needed supplies, wrap them, and put them under the tree with a note that the kitten would be theirs after the holidays. Others would give the intended giftee a picture of their new pet to be along with a collar, or toy, or bag of food. Most of our customers thought this a great idea when I explained how stressful arriving in a new home is on a normal day and was so much more so during the holidays. In fact, they took great pleasure in buying twice as many things for the new pet to put under the tree for the giftee than they would normally buy.
I managed to schedule pick up dates so we weren’t jammed with people on the same day too. All of this saved the kittens the stress of being in a new home when stress and activity levels are off the scale. They would enter their new homes when things were calm and they had time to acclimate to their new families.
I know several dog breeders who have done this for many years. Many of them refuse to allow a pet to leave their premises until after Christmas. Reputable breeders will gladly hold the pups (or kittens) until after the holidays.
If you plan to give someone a pet for the holidays, spare the animal the stress, present the person with the pet’s supplies or a picture, and a note that their new companion is waiting for them.

Another crazy Christmas display I wish I’d thought of putting up
Posted by doggonedmysteries
You know darned well this display stopped traffic and caused a few problems. Bet there were a few disgruntled neighbors too.
{Sigh} Why don’t I get these brilliant ideas?
On another note I added 91 hits yesterday…mwahahaha the dinner out is getting closer! Thanks to Linda of Crone and Bear it for sending her blog buddies over. My dear, I do believe you have more than 8 readers. Thanks to all of you who are clicking on this site to help me win the bet with DH!

Bad TV commercials
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Is it me or are the TV commercials getting worse? It’s bad enough when we’re assaulted by one bad erectile dysfunction medication commercial after another, but now it’s Christmas shopping commercials. Does anyone else find that blond lady on the Target commercials downright psycho? She’s enough to give you nightmares.
And don’t get me started on the mannequin with her jazz hands. Give me cute. Like the Armstrong Floor commercial with the skate boarding Bulldog. Give me snappy and witty but please don’t tell me to have a happy period. If Mother Nature ever showed up here to hand me a ‘present’, I’d slap the crap out of her.
It’s no wonder parents go broke at Christmas. Little Johnny and Janie are inundated with commercials for expensive toys they must have! Excuse me, but what child NEEDS a $30.00 cell phone? Children lose things! Heck, they lose mittens that are strung through their coat sleeves around their necks or hermetically sealed to their coat cuffs. Guaranteed you’ll be hearing about how they lost that phone within a week. You might as well go flush the money down the toilet, or go lose it at the gambling tables. It all amounts to the same thing.
There are no limits to the insanity.

What foods do you crave when the seasons change?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I find my cravings change with the seasons. Right now, in the fall, I begin to crave vegetable laden soups and stews, crisp tart apples and apple cider, herb teas, pecan and pumpkin pies, and acorn squash. Dear Hubby wants slow cooked beef and pork roasts with mashed potatoes and carrots or corn. He wants apple crisp, bread pudding, and rice pudding with raisins all still warm from the oven.
My father would make a wonderful turkey soup after Thanksgiving. He’d boil down the turkey carcass, put in everything but the kitchen sink, and never wrote the darned thing down, he died in 1995. I’d almost perfected his recipe after years of trial and error when DH decided he no longer liked turkey. That was the end of that. Now I make chicken soup with a PA Dutch flair.
DH’s mother used to make one thing very well. She made an applesauce cake to die for however, she no longer bakes. No matter how often DH asks for it I won’t make her cake. Why? Because no matter how good it is, it can never compare to the memory of his mother’s.
It is fall, and I still crave Dad’s soup. DH still craves his mother’s applesauce cake. What foods do you crave when the seasons change?

This is why I enjoy Trick or Treat night
Posted by doggonedmysteries
These pictures are only a few of the people who came by. We had so many Trick or Treaters that we finally gave up on taking pictures. We went through 16 lbs of candy this year. We all had a blast.

Halloween break 2009
Posted by doggonedmysteries
This is my ‘see you in two days’ post. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be busy getting ready for Friday’s festivities. I’ll be back on Saturday with pictures of our fun. I’m hoping to snap plenty of pictures of the little monsters who show up at our porch. That all depends on fast they come through though. Last year we had so many large groups arrive, I never got a chance to take pictures of them.
You try taking pictures when you have to work the fog machine and hand out candy at the same time. We did have fun though. Maybe if I beg Dear Hubby enough he’ll be willing to snap a few pictures.
Have fun! Many thanks to you for stopping by. For those of you who take the time to comment on my posts, I am grateful.

Trick or Treat night is almost here
Posted by doggonedmysteries

I need to buy more candy this week I don’t have near enough for the hordes. Thursday I’ll make a big pan of lasagna (in my brand new pan gifted to me by a very dear friend.) Then on Friday night, all I’ll have to do is heat it up after the children have finished. It saves me time.
I supply the garlic bread. G is bringing over a pumpkin swirl cheesecake that is to die for and I have a weakness for cheesecakes. The pumpkin swirl is one of her best. I know this because whenever she makes a cheesecake she brings me samples.
While the lasagna is cooking Thursday night, I might carve a pumpkin or two if I can the size I like. I haven’t seen many good ones yet. Most of them are too short, too small, or too thin. Yes, I’m picky.
Friday G and I will spend the day decorating the porch—a haunted house theme this year. We’ll get our exercise going up two flights of stairs to the attic to haul all the decorations down. It’s going to take several trips.
