Writer, writer burning bright
Posted by doggonedmysteries
One (or rather 4) of the best things about a Pennwriters conference is that our published authors are so approachable. The speakers beg you to ask questions. They make you work like crazy in the workshops. AND, for participating in his sessions Tim Esaias rewards you malt balls. I had two.
The conference kicks you into high gear for three days. You come home fired up and ready to write. People like Dave can plop their butts into their chairs and write like crazy. People like me have to go back to reality and unpack, feed the dogs, take them out, write checks for bills, take the dogs out, cook dinner for DH, eat, and then, hopefully, sit down to write. It didn’t happen that way. When I sat down to write, it was almost one in the morning because after dinner I fell asleep in my chair with Gavin. Remember, I was sleep deprived.
I turned on my computer and checked my E-mail. Dave had E-mailed twice, once that he’d already done some rewriting and the second time to show me even more changes. I wish I could be the hare with my writing like Dave. No such luck, I’m the tortoise.

It gets better every year
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Ah, the conference. The joy of seeing my writer friends I haven’t seen for a year, or if they missed the Pittsburgh conference, two years. Then there’s the excitement of meeting new writers and making new friends. Nothing tops it and I look forward to it every year.
On Friday and Saturday there are two hours of sessions in the mornings, and after a mid day break, two hours of sessions in the afternoon, we had a choice of four sessions per hour. What to do? What to do? (You choose the one that you think best suits your needs.) If after sitting through a few minutes one finds it isn’t what one wants, he/she can leave and try another. No one is going to stop him/her or question where one is going. Arriving late to a session isn’t a sin either.
Believe me, there were sessions that ran at the same time that I was dying to attend, all of them. I did narrow it down to two but since I can’t split myself into two people, I had to resort to other ways to decide. For example, Ramona Defelice Long had a session on Elements of mystery writing and Loree Lough was presenting hers on Characters: why they do what they do at the same time. I had to flip a coin. Sorry Ramona but Loree won the coin toss.
Sunday morning there were more sessions. Four from 9:15 to 10:15 and three from 10:30 to 11:30.
In every session I attended, I took copious notes and made sure to have whatever handouts the speaker provided. All of which I will reread and use until they fall apart.

I’m back even though my E-mail says I’m not
Posted by doggonedmysteries
It’s 1:30 in the morning on Monday as I write this. I fell asleep in my chair around six in the evening Sunday. I’d had about two hours of sleep Saturday night. I believe that from Thursday night to Sunday I managed to sleep about 6 hours in total.
Unable to sleep because I am a night person, the night shift desk clerks at the hotel are my new best friends. (I hope you are reading this, girls.) I gave them Dove dark chocolate or Hershey dark Bliss candy every night as I haunted the lobby and slipped outside for a few cigarettes. They love me.
I would go to bed, truly I would. I’d put on my New Yorker magazine dog PJs (go read my, ‘I sent myself a PajamaGram) and I’d crawl into bed around two. I couldn’t fall to sleep and rather than toss and turn for hours I’d get up again. Tiptoeing so as not to disturb my roommate, I’d feel around for my light jacket, put the jacket on, load the pockets with chocolate, grab my cigarettes, and slip out the door.
I’d drop some chocolate at the desk and go outside to the designated pariah corner. One of these days, I’ll find the will power to quit smoking again—I did it for an entire year once. However, it’s not easy to quit when DH chain-smokes and he’ll never quit. So please don’t deluge me with the standard you’re gonna die comments.
Now if only I can turn off the E-mail away message on my E-mail. It is refusing to go away.

Another day closer
Posted by doggonedmysteries
It’s three days to the conference and two days until I leave for Lancaster. I daren’t bring one thing downstairs until Thursday morning. If I do, Gavin will know for sure that Mom is going away for a few days. He already senses something is up and is a bit more clingy than usual.
Thursday morning before I leave, I’ll backwash the pond filters and make sure everything is running smoothly. That only leaves one thing for DH to do there and that’s toss in some Koi food once a day. Even if he forgets to do that, the fish will be fine since there’s plenty of natural food.
I showed G where the watering can is and she has the keys to the yard gate and house. B has my car keys so he can work on the fuse problem.
All I have to do is close my suitcase, grab the bag of hanging stuff, bring them downstairs, and load the car when my conference roommate gets here.
After that, all I need to do is have a good time and learn more about this crazy business of writing.

Frost? Really?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
After the lovely warm weather we had Last week this week wasn’t so nice. We’ve had strong, damaging winds and chilly days. There’s even a frost warning tonight. Geez, I wish it would stay warm. So much for the iris that are in bloom right now. By morning, those blossoms will be mush. I do hope the ones that haven’t bloomed will be okay.
DH isn’t minding this cold spell since it doesn’t sap his energy as the heat does. He has his mobility cart up and running so the dogs are enjoying running walks around the yard with him. At least they’re getting their exercise.
Since it was too windy and cold to go out and garden I finished printing my cards for the conference. That project took forever since I can only print one page at a time. The ink is running low in the printer but I don’t think I’ll buy more. What I’ll do is shop around for another printer. Old faithful is dying a slow death.
With four days left, until I leave for the conference, I packed a little more tonight. By noon on Thursday we’ll be on the road to Lancaster.

5 days to go
Posted by doggonedmysteries
The packing of the suitcase has begun, sort of. I’ve been setting out the things I plan to wear at the conference. My toiletries are packed and so are my shoes. I probably won’t wear the shoes that I’ve packed but they are there if I want something dressier than sneakers or flip-flops. I can’t help it I hate wearing shoes, even sneakers.
I gave G the key to the yard gate so she can water the plants that are in pots we know DH will forget them. She won’t. She has permanent possession of a house key so she will check on DH and the pups too. Her hubby B is going to see if he can find the glitch in my car while I’m gone. It seems that there is a fuse blown somewhere in the car. The cigarette lighters don’t work and I use them to plug in my air compressor to fill my tires. As on my old van, this one too has problem holding its air. (Danged, aluminum wheels.)
I did the laundry so DH can’t complain he has no clean socks or underwear. There’s plenty of food in the freezer and fridge and several restaurants that deliver he won’t starve. The dogs have food and treats. I downloaded the pictures on my camera and cleared the card. The battery is charging.

Conference countdown and happenings in the garden
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Six days to go. We picked up the last few items for the baskets we’re donating to the Chinese auction. Two of the baskets are on my kitchen table. My conference roommate has the others at her house. I almost pity the person who wins the one basket. They’ll need someone with a strong back and a weak mind to carry it to their car. Um, Dave? Did I just hear you volunteer?
DH has his cart charged and claims he is ready to handle the dogs. I bet that by the end of the first day, the dogs will be handling him. BTs are like that. Give them an inch they’ll take a mile.
For a change of subject, there’s a very noisy wren building a nest in a little birdhouse in the yard next door. It’s hard to believe that such a loud song can come from such a tiny bird. A pair of cardinals are busy constructing a nest in the chocolate vines and ivy on my shed. It’s a good thing they waited until the frogs left. We had one attempt to climb up the vines one night. After the frog fell from about three feet up DH dubbed him George of the jungle.

10 days to the Pennwriters conference
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I’m starting the countdown now. Even though the Pennwriters conference isn’t until the 14th I leave in ten days for Lancaster. (We like to get there a day early.) This means I have nine days to make sure everything at home is ready for my four-day absence.
I also have a few things I need to purchase before I leave. Things I want to take along with me. Bottled water sold there is expensive my roommate and I will bring our own. I take a small cooler along. Extra coffee, sweetener, and creamer are other must haves. Snacks—have to have them too.
My roommate and I need to pick up a few small items for our Chinese auction baskets. We donate several each year. One of ours this year is a real doozy. I can’t wait to see the reaction it gets.
Hey Dave, I’m looking forward to seeing you again. Are you ready to get rowdy?

New to writers conferences?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Volunteer, it’s the best way to learn. When I went to my first conference, I felt a bit overwhelmed at the session choices we had. I soon found my way around, relaxed, and enjoyed myself. At one point I was asked to help when someone had to leave early. I did my first volunteer work at a conference. It was fun.
I offered to help wherever they needed someone at my second conference. I had a blast introducing a few of the speakers in the sessions. I gave other people breaks so they could go to a session they wanted to attend.
At my third conference, I volunteered to go along with the hotel van driver to meet the train and bring some of our speakers, agents, and editors back to the hotel. Can you imagine having all those people to yourself for a twenty-minute ride? It was a hoot.
I was a frequent volunteer for several years and did a variety of things. One of my favorite things to do was be a timekeeper for agent and editor appointments.
The last few years I’ve attended without volunteering. Why? I’m tired. The conference has become my yearly vacation where I go to recharge my batteries, learn more about the business of writing, socialize with friends, and meet new people. I don’t want to have anyone depending on me since I get that enough at home.

What to pack for a writers’ conference
Posted by doggonedmysteries
It’s a good idea to have a supply of business cards on hand. I usually print up several business card stock pages worth and pack them in my suitcase. Pens, a writer can never have too many pens. I always carry several notebooks of varying sizes. You never know when you’ll need one.
If you have a finished book, bring along a synopsis and the first two chapters. You might get a chance to pitch it. Speaking of pitching your book, make sure you have your ‘elevator pitch’ perfected. You use that one when someone asks what your book is about, if you can crunch your synopsis down to one sentence, you have it.
Comfortable shoes to wear because you’ll do a lot of walking between sessions. Good clothes, you do want to make a good impression on people.
My roommate and I make sure we have snacks and bottled water because bringing our own saves us big bucks. I print out envelopes marked ‘housekeeping’ to put the housekeeping tips in each day. Do remember to tip, skimp somewhere else, but don’t skimp on tips. Remember these people work for minimum wage and they work hard. Don’t forget the wait staff, bartenders, and bellhops too. They remember those who tip them well.

Before the conference…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Before I leave for what I call ‘my annual four-day working vacation’ I have to prepare the home front. DH is no longer capable of cooking meals other than heating things in the microwave. Therefore, I’ll be making and putting up frozen dinners for him.
The dogs are sometimes too much for DH to handle alone. I’ve arranged for friends to stop in and take them for walks so they are good and tired. That way they won’t be their normal handfuls. I’ll make certain that their food is in good supply and they have plenty of cookies.
Then I need to print out my works in progress so that, if I find time, I can work on them at the conference. I will do the writing on my Alphasmart and can transfer everything to my computer when I get home. However, I need to have the printouts to work from since the Alphasmart doesn’t hold the book files. Yes, this is where a laptop would be a very handy thing and would save my aching back from schlepping a lot of paper. I dream of having a nice one, one of these days…
