Thirty-four billion to bail out the auto industry

Tonight on the news, we heard the announcement that the auto industry says it now needs a THIRTY-FOUR BILLION DOLLAR bail out.  Are you frigging kidding me?

We can’t afford to buy a new car, so why should we give them our tax money?  I hate to say it, but most cars today sell for more than what I paid for my house thirty-five years ago and I refuse to take out a second mortgage to buy a car.

Last January my ancient van gasped its last in the middle of heavy work traffic never to move on its own again.  Did anyone bail us out?  If you consider AAA coming and hauling the old hulk away a bail out, well, then maybe.  Could I afford a new car?  No.  Hell, I bought another used ten-year-old car.  One might consider ten year olds to be youngsters but not when they are cars.

Maybe if ‘We The People each got our fair share of this THIRTY-FOUR BILLION, we could all buy a new car which in turn would give the auto industry a good shot in the arm.  Gee, wouldn’t that be a better bail out?  Give everyone a check made out ‘for the purchase of a new car’ heck, just for GP let’s make it stipulate ‘a new American made car.’  We’d all have new cars and the auto industry would get MONEY.  Many of the old clunkers would be off the streets.  We could save money on gas with newer gas efficient cars and cut down on air pollution with cleaner running engines.

Does anyone see a problem with this?  Tell me, where’s the downside here?

  1. Interesting idea, but it would give only about $155 to each person 18 or over. Just another attempt to slaughter the golden goose cause the eggs aren’t enough for the greedy.

Aw, darn. There goes my new car. LOL!

  3. I read on another blog that if they gave “we the people” who paid taxes the entire trillion dollar bailout money it would come to around 450,000 each. After taxes we would end up with around $250,000. Now you could pay off your bills, buy a car, pay down your mortgage, put it into savings or stocks, buy a new something, whatever. I see that as the perfect way to stimulate the economy. “We the people” could get this engine going again in all sectors of the economy — auto, housing, banks, etc. And, the government would even get a chunk back in taxes. I think it is the only way to go!

If they absolutely insist on bailing out these companies, then they should at least fire the management. Wouldn’t we get fired if we did such a crappy job? BTW…love the dogs!

Gavin says, “Tell Cj I’m the handsome white one.”
Patty says, “No! Tell CJ I’m prettier cause I’m a girl.”

Hey, you two it’d be nice if I could get a word in edgwise. Welcome to my world CJ.

  5. That’s a good idea except for one small point. As my son pointed out, “Who would buy an American car?”
    I sure as blazes wouldn’t.

We haven’t had an American car in our house in 16 years. The closest we’ve come in that time is a Pontiac Vibe–which is a Toyota Matrix in disguise.

The American auto industry is in the shape it’s in because they make crappy cars. I have a 14 year old Toyota truck I’ve put less than $100 a year in repairs into. A friend bought a Chrysler van the same year we bought our Honda. She’s had 3 (yes, 3!) recalls for the same problem. Why should we, the American people, save them from their own stupidity and ineptitude?

Let them sink or swim on their own, I say. If you or I owned a business and were in the jam they’re in, we wouldn’t get a bail out from the government. We’d shape up or close our doors. They should have to do the same.

Dave, you are certainly right about letting them sink or swim on their own. They dug the hole they are in, they should dig themselves out.

Shirley, if I thought for one instant either administration would truly bother to take the time to listen the people of this country I would.
