Okay, I’m certain I’ll get flack over this post but someone has to say it.

P.T. Barnum said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.”  He was right.

Designer dogs are mutts, mixed breeds, mongrels.  I kid you not.  Only a few years ago, those “designer dogs” were the dogs people gave away.  Yes, you heard me right they were free.  If you’ve paid more than a hundred dollars at most, you’ve been taken to the cleaners.  Did you know that by endorsing designer dogs you are aiding puppy mills by turning them into a VERY lucrative business?  Because now they can breed mutts, ask a ridiculous price for them, and they answer to no one.  At least with registered purebred dogs they had to answer to national and international registries.

Granted they can be cute, but muddling up purebred lines will do nothing more than, in the future, give you dogs that have no distinct characteristics.  They will all look like the feral dogs you find in third world countries.  The excuse that designer dogs are healthier is not true.  Reputable breeders of purebred dogs do their utmost to make sure their dogs are healthy and that their temperaments are only the very best.  Mind you, I said REPUTABLE!

  1. I actually have a designer dog a Puggle and I love her. But I did not get her from a mill I bought her from a family that after picking her up at the breeder could not keep her and did not want to give her to the pound so I took her in. I am against puppy mills of any kind. I would rather have a fixed dog to spoil and love.

Ah, yes but you didn’t purchase your Puggle from the breeder did you? A puppy miller can have a small operation or a large one. What you did was a rescue.
I’m so glad your little gal has a loving home. Not all of these ‘designer’ dogs will. Many of them will end up in a pound because the buyers ‘had no idea’ what the temperament, energy levels, grooming requirements, etc. are like. They bought the dog because it was ‘special and cost a lot of money’ just to impress their neighbors…

  2. You tell ’em sister! Makes me so mad to hear of someone paying $2500 buck for a labradoodle! I’m like you, can’t resist telling them they paid more for their mutt than I paid for my health tested, parents health tested, GRANDPARENTS health tested Bull Terrier! And they want to ban OUR dogs!

Just for the record. What began my rant on this, was I saw a woman in a local park, she had a tiny Boxer in her arms. I was all “AWWW, Boxers are my second favorite breed.” I asked how old he was and she said. “6 1/2 weeks and we’ve had him for a whole week.” What?!! In our state it’s illegal to let a pup go before 8 weeks of age. And then she goes on to tell me, “he’s REALLY SPECIAL, we paid a LOT of money for him. He’s 1/2 Boxer and !/2 English Bulldog.”
“Lady, you got taken for a ride. He’s a mutt, a mix, and not that long ago a dog like that would’ve been given away. He’s also too young.”
(Sigh) It was like talking to a post. Woman was a dumb as a bag of rocks, no wonder she PAID A LOT OF MONEY for a mutt.

  3. Don’t get me wrong I still had to pay for her but you are right she is a rescue. But she was wanted really bad by us. I had researched this breed for a year and knew what I was getting into. I found out later that Paddy my dog, both her parents are Puggle’s does that still make her a mutt lol. Sounds to me like that lady was taken, if she meant to buy that dog like that she would have used the fancy designer dog name that they all get. The breeders that accidently get mixed dogs figure that if they give it a cute name they can sell it for a price without knowing how it will act from being mixed. That is my theory on the whole designer dog thing.
