Writer set your goals…uh, sure

As a writer, I should set a daily goal and strive to reach it.  I try.  I honestly do try, but it seems that when I do someone moves the goal line.

My goal for this blog is to write 200 words a day.  My daily writing goal on my books is 1000 words.  So far, I’m hitting the goal on the blog and falling short on the books.  I hope to change that.

I discovered that I was unhappy writing my book in two point of views and I am going back to the original format of writing it in a single POV.  This past week I’ve been doing a lot of cutting and pasting.  I hope that by the end of this week I’ll be rolling along on a much improved manuscript.

The dual point of view was not working at all.  I also think that by going back to a single one I’ll be able to drop clues and red herrings easier.  I believe my remaining characters will be more fully developed and become more interesting.

My critiquing group is probably going to kill me when I hand them the new manuscript at the end of the month.

  1. Great blog – thanks.

That is exactly what I have had to do, but somehow life keeps getting in the way.

My book is a travellogue, and rather than try to catch up on my last trips, am now aiming to journal my next trip.

Maybe I should now start with blogging my packing, keeping it all within the required restrictions of an international flight.

I will check back to see how yours is coming along.

    Lifey

  2. SHOULD! Did I see a should in the first sentence???? Sounds to me as if you are making terrific progress in getting your book back together as a single POV. How many words a day that encompasses means nothing compared to real progress of making strides towards the very best book that comes tripping from your fingers.

  3. Setting writing goals is easy. Meeting them sometimes is not. When the words are flowing, 2 or 3 thousand words a day happens in no time. When they aren’t 10 words a day are a miracle. Shoot for 1000 words a day average. Be happy when you top it. Say, “Tomorrow,” when you don’t.

    • Heck, these days if I hit half my goal I feel as though I should celebrate with a nice bottle of champagne…

I am soooo looking forward to the May PW conference where I don’t have to do anything but write, enjoy the company of other writers, and tease you. I promise, no ‘wanted’ posters.

  4. Oh I can’t wait to read those books!!

  5. Hi doggonedmysteries,

I wish you all the best on your writing and the change of POV. I’m back on the first novel – an agent wants me to sort out various problems all revolving around the same people – and I have had to made backup copies of the thriller I started recently (the one about the therapist in Dorset) in order to get the first one right.

    Have a good holiday weekend.

  6. Hooray on having an agent interested enough to have you make some changes. Good luck!
