It must be January because I’m getting the gardening bug

It never fails once we get that tiny warm spell, that miniscule thaw out in January; I begin to think of gardening.  I scan online seed catalogues.  I dig through catalogues I get in the mail.  I plan and dream of where things will go in the spring.

I’m on a constant search for perennials.  I hunt for anything in a black flower because I love the way the black accents make all the other colors pop.

I blame my father and my Aunt J. for this.  They got me started.  They caused my addiction to gardening.

My father always planted tomatoes and a few other vegetables each year.  I often helped him dig around in the garden.  When I visited my Aunt J on a more regular basis, she moved my interest to perennials because she and my Uncle H had a garden shop.  Aunt J caused my full blown addiction when they went out of business and she insisted I load my van with plants on several trips.

I still have most of those perennials in my garden.  Some of which I’ve split over the years and given to G for her gardens.  Now G and I spend the spring haunting garden shops and loading our gardens with new discoveries.

  1. How beautiful – I love the family connection. For us, my Sister is the holder of the family garden heirlooms; bleeding hearts and tiger lilies from GrandMa, purple flag (now Iris) from GreatGrandMa. Sadly, we lost the peonies from Scotland’s GreatGrandMother; we sold the house long before anyone thought to collect the living treasures.

  2. It’s probably just as well you and my Mum don’t live near each other – you’d be really bad influences on each other in terms of buying plants! Mum only has a pocket handkerchief garden now compared with what she had before, but she still manages to buy new plants all the time!

  3. I have a baby’s breath plant that my neighbor gave me years ago when she moved out of state. The plant came down to her from her great grandmother.

Jennie, your Mum and I would probably be bad influences on each other for sure–maybe it’s a good thing that we live on opposite sides of the pond.

  4. I wish the gardening bug would bite me. We still have a foot of snow ground and more on the way tomorrow. I would say the gardening bug is inching closer as I have been looking though all the catalogs and planning for a new perennial butterfly bed.

  5. It’s amazing how the garden calls out to you isn’t it? The buds are starting and you can feel spring on its way. As I am in UK, I usually feel the gardening year really gets going after Crufts – the hour changes and we have light in the evening :). Do you feel the same after Westminster?
