Bullfrogs can draw blood.

Yes, I do think that most of the people around here are convinced I’m crazy.  You should have seen the looks I got from a few cars that passed me tonight when I was picking up night crawlers in the alley.  Hey, I’m a gardener.  I also have fish and bullfrogs that love worms.  Who am I to pass by the hordes of huge night crawlers that were wandering out onto the street because we had rain?

One person understood.  A woman about my age pulled her car up even with me and rolled down her window.  “For your gardens right?”

“Well, yes.  And for the frogs and fish—free food you know.  Commercial Koi food costs plenty.”

She pointed back down the street from the direction she’d come.  “I saw a bunch of huge ones back there.”

     “Thanks.”

She waved and headed on her way.  I went looking for more night crawlers.

Goliath the bullfrog was pleased with my midnight snack offerings.  Although, at one point, he thought my index finger was more food.  Ouch!  I actually bled.  Ungrateful sod.

The Koi were happy too.  I only gave them a few worms and then the rest went into the garden.

  1. sounds like fun but I bet all your litte friends were happy & no feeding the frogs fresh flesh LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, heck no! The stinker was getting greedy for the worms and I guess he figured my finger was nice juicy one. 😉

  2. Goliath? The bird-eating bullfrog? You’re lucky he gave your finger back. As a youngster, we nursed a sick bird back to health and part of our ‘job’ was to collect food, worms, bugs, seeds. So, we got over the yukky part of worms and bugs and actually got excited on rainy days. Edgar would pop up and down on his perch screeching encouragement when he heard the rain on our roof.

They know! Goliath the bullfrog will stalk me when he sees me out with the flashlight so he can get the prime choices.

  3. Please translate for this simple soul from across the Pond. What are night crawlers?
It’s this common language separated by an ocean. 🙂

Ah, sorry about that. Night crawlers are very large worms that come out at night to crwl around on the wet grass…they make a special appearence after a rain.

  4. Oh Lord! Way too funny. I can just picture this. I bet those night crawlers who came up to the surface so they wouldn’t drown, almost regretted it. I’m not sure which would be the worst way to go, drowning or death by bullfrog and koi, lol.

As I said, most of them went into my gardens. A great way to keep the ‘local’ supply going for the frogs and Koi.
