Pilling the dogs

We should own stock in the OTC allergy medicine company.  I take two a day, the vet has Gavin on three a day, and Patty is on two.  Then there are days when the pollen count is high and even DH needs them.

Pilling a Bull Terrier isn’t easy when you have one like Gavin.  You want to what?  Open my mouth?  I don’t think so.  Our vet has collapsed in the giggles while trying to get a look inside Gavin’s mouth and he’s a big guy.  Gavin will clamp his mouth shut and you can’t get in there with a crow bar.  On the other hand, Patty is easy.

At least she’s easy if she hasn’t seen you give Gavin his pill.  Gavin gets peanut butter on a spoon with his pill on top.  He’d eat a building if you covered it in peanut butter.  Patty sees him get peanut butter and she wants hers served the same way.

I don’t blame her I like peanut butter too but I like mine on crackers or in a sandwich with jelly.  Have you ever tried a peanut butter and jalapeño jelly sandwich?  It’s good.  Yeah, I’m weird.

  1. My friend’s GSD has to be on meds for arthritis. She told me he was really good about taking them. I was there last Wed when she gave him the pill, it ended up on his chin the first time, so she tried giving it to him within a dog treat, hardness vs. hardnes. The dog found the pill and spit it out going on to eat the treat. She finally did it the way I always did and opened his mouth to stick it as far down as she could. She had to do that twice because he coughed it up the first time, lol

I have always pilled my dogs by opening their mouths, shoving the pill way back, and then hold the mouth closed while rubbing the throat to get them to swallow…that is until Gavin came along…

  2. Yep, just when you think you’ve learned all the rules about dogs, along comes one who’ll change them, lol.

Gavin has been our rule changer for sure.

  3. Difficult at best. Car-man suggested using the ‘me first’ attitude and that works in our house.

One mini cheese ball to each pup at the same time, stuff the pill as need be. Make sure they see cheese ball #2 and follow it fast on #1’s heels. (For 2 dogs, you need 4 cheese balls)

They’ll swallow the first cheese ball without hesitating if they see cheese ball #2 and think it’s going to the ‘other’ dog…

    Good luck.
