Are you a bad weather survivalist?

As we on the East Coast batten down the hatches and prepare for our first blizzard of the season, some of us still hold out the hope that the storm turns seaward.  Well, at least those of us who are sane do.

The idea of an oncoming blizzard sends some people into a strange frenzy of activity.  They panic and become bad weather survivalists.  They crowd into the grocery stores.

I know these people.  Although they have an unopened gallon of milk in the fridge, they dash to the store to buy five more along with tons of other things they already have.  Heaven forbid they don’t buy out the store on paper products.

We have these storms all the time and it may take a day or two for the streets to get plowed but plowed they get.  Stores have their lots plowed privately; their doors open ASAP, they want to make a profit.

We’re more of the keep things on hand so we don’t have to make panic runs sort.  I hate to shop and shopping in crowds of bad weather survivalists is almost as bad as shopping on black Fridays.  I refuse to do it.

  1. My favorite was watching a guy explaining to the cop that it was all right for him to destroy the newspaper machine because he needed to stockpile the papers to light his fireplace when the power went out in the coming storm.

On the other hand, Atlanta did not have the two or three days and back to business – the longest my area had no power after an ice storm was three weeks.

    Ouch!

  2. As well you shouldn’t! Having worked in a grocery store in New Orleans at one point in my checkered career, I can assure you that panic stocking up before the storm gets really ugly (& potentially lethal.) Much more better you should enough on hand to get you through three days — they almost always have things back in hand by three days.

I always have enough on hand to last a week or more.

  3. Hmmmm a survialist? Well, NO ! I hate this fluffy white crap from Heaven! I am still thawing out from last year’s blizzard…. I don’t shop for all those necessities because that gives me an excuse to eat really bad stufff! Besides, in this day and age…. I know a store will be open somewhere, just a matter if I feel like walking to it.
The doggies however, LOVE this stuff ! My Scotty just wants to live out there. However, our black Lab mix puppy isn’t nearly as into it as her big sister!

Hi sweetie, long time no see! Gavin and Patty hate the snow as much as I do. They only go out long enough to go and rush back in.

  4. Thanks for this post. I fully agree with what you are saying. I have been talking about this subject a lot lately with my father so may this will get him to see my point of view. Fingers crossed!

  5. When I hear people in a panic over a coming snow storm, I want to scream at them, “You live in Pennsylvania. It snows here. Deal with it!”
And it’s not just milk, bread, and eggs they try to hoard. Drugs (of the prescription variety) are right up there, too.

It’s crazy isn’t it? Our roads are quickly cleared in PA so why do they panic?

  6. I have yet to stock up my pantry because of a lil ol’ storm. Like you, I know the roads will be cleared and it won’t take 3 days plus unless you’re in the boonies. I’ve seen snow plows out and about before the snow even starts to cling to the roads. I think those folks who stock up are wusses.
