Where have our little birds gone?

G and I were talking the other day and during the conversation, I mentioned that I hadn’t had any birds at my suet feeders in a while.  She remarked that they haven’t had to put out fresh suet for quite a while either.

In fact, the only birds I’ve seen lately are crows, grackles, and the occasional mourning dove.  Where are my woodpeckers, juncos, titmice, cardinals, and sparrows?  It dawned on us that we haven’t heard any birdsongs for a month.

We’ve never had such a bird empty winter before.  I do hope spring brings them back and they aren’t gone due to some devastation.  I miss my happy little birds.

  1. I’ve had a reduced number since the snow thawed, but I lay in bed for a long time this morning listening to the dawn chorus, and my feeders are frequented by an assortment of robins, blue tits, coal tits, long tailed tits, wrens, starlings and not one but two woodpeckers, plus other avian visitors that I haven’t yet identified.

In the summer we had four woodpeckers mom, dad, and two young ones. And an huge assortment of other small birds. It’s too quiet out there now.

  2. They’re all at my bird bath, I’ll send them right back up! BTW the gossip is you have a lovely garden…

Whew! I was getting worried. Tell them I said hi and I’ll see them in the spring. I wish I could see my garden, right now it is under snow.

  3. I don’t know about the others you mentioned, but we have a slew of extra sparrows in my town this year. I guess they decided “head west, young man” should be their new mantra, lol.

    West and south… 😉
