Oh, freaking DUH!

Wednesday I go for my first cardio check up since the heart attack.  It’s a bit intimidating it’s not like I had any advance warning I’d be having surgery.

Which brings me to the bill we got on Saturday.  It seems that I wasn’t precertified for the procedure.  Um,  it was an emergency, doesn’t that mean there wouldn’t be a precertification?  Or do you call them for precertification before you dial 911 for the ambulance?

Don’t you just adore insurance companies?

  1. oh sweetie I’m sorry you need to face the stupidity of the insurance people. I went through that when Devoted Spouse had his heart attack. This humongous bill arrived and I almost went into cardiac arrest. Stay calm – start calling. They’ll straighten it out. it’s the system and the bureaucracy that doesn’t understand the word “emergency”. xo Linda

It never fails that mail like that arrives on a Saturday so you have to wait until Monday to call…

  2. Usually in an emergency situation like you had the insurance company gives you 24-48 hours post-procedure to file the necessary paperwork.
Have the doctor who treated you (or the hospital) ask your insurance if they would have preferred treating you for a full-blown cardiac arrest and by-pass surgery. Remind me sometime to tell you about the insurance company that didn’t want to pay for the antibiotic to save a patients leg.

    I hate insurance companies…
