The return of the ducks
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I guess the ducks enjoyed their afternoon tea at our pond yesterday, because promptly at five today, they returned. One good thing about their visits is that they seem to have a taste for the string algae. It has bloomed with all the heat we’ve had the last three days and I was ready to go buy an algaecide, which I do hate to use. However, since the pond is in full sun it does become necessary from time to time. The female in particular seems to relish the flavor. Yesterday she climbed to the top of the waterfall and cleaned most of it out of there. If they keep to this daily schedule, I think we can accommodate them without any problems from the pups.
Neither one of the dogs has spotted the ducks yet. Moreover, since I know they are there I take the pups out into the yard on leashes and direct them to the front of the yard. There’s no sense in tempting fate.
I can picture Patty having an encounter with those big birds. She’s used to robins, cardinals, finches, and mourning doves, and ignores them, but ducks? She’s never met one. She’d likely take a flying leap into the pond after them. Gavin would probably bark at them while backing up to get closer to me, just in case.

Wow, my 200th post
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I wasn’t sure if I was going to write about anything tonight.
My head feels as though it’s been stuffed with wet insulation and my chest sounds like that blank spot on the end of a record album. Oh, wait. That would be difficult for many people (under a certain age) to understand. How about this, my chest sounds like it’s full of pop rocks and I’ve been coughing up pieces of my lungs. EW, nasty sounding isn’t it?
The pups snuggled with me every time I managed to sit for a few minutes today.
I can’t be sick. I have too much to do.

Malcolm’s Mayhem 14
Posted by doggonedmysteries
(Someone asked me if I was ever going to do more Malcolm’s Mayhem stories. So I thought I’d post another one tonight.)
There is no such thing as an indestructible toy. It’s true, I speak from experience, Bull Terrier ownership, and I have the vet bills to prove it. There is no toy made that a BT can’t destroy in minutes.
Dear hubby came home with a large rubber toy one day. The labeling on the box claimed it to be made of indestructible English rubber. He was excited to have found a toy that Malcolm couldn’t destroy. Me, well I was skeptical about the whole deal. I’d seen him pop a professional basketball in two seconds. This dog thought a bowling ball was a chew toy.
Therefore, I made a bet with DH. If Malcolm didn’t destroy the toy, I’d wash his truck. If he did destroy it, DH owed me a dinner out at the restaurant of my choice. He pulled the toy from its box with a flourish. Malcolm danced around him giving him gimme, gimme barks. DH tossed the toy into the air. Malcolm caught it, and took off like a shot.
Five minutes later, I was getting dressed to go out dinner. DH was cleaning up little pieces of indestructible English rubber. Dang, I loved that dog!

Patty’s trip to the vet–always an adventure
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Unlike Gavin, Patty seems to enjoy going to the vet’s office. Granted, there was a minute or two where she shook a tiny bit, but I think that business started when we once brought her along with the great and cowering Gavin. We won’t do that again. This time she was only there for her rabies shot and check up. She was a very good girl and ended her visit with a demonstration of her favorite ‘stick ‘em up’ trick, lots of treats, tail wags, and plenty of pets. She knows how to get treats out them even after her vet tells her she needs to cut down on her snacks.
In the waiting room, she was a little ready to scuffle with two of the dogs she saw, but I kept her under strict control. She hasn’t been good with other dogs since the year a neighbor’s pit-bull came through our fence and tried to chew her up. Patty never quite got over that incident and became dog aggressive after that with all dogs except Gavin. We’ve been working on having her ignore other dogs and she’s getting the idea. However, I wouldn’t trust her without supervision.
That dog was the reason we tore down the old fencing and hedges and installed the new fencing. The owners were too lazy to keep the dog under control and in their own yard. I blame them for the entire problem, not the dog.

Rain, rain, and more rain
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I hope tonight’s rain is the end of it for a while. The gardens and yard are well watered. The magnolia blossoms have covered the ground in pink and white, and the poor pups are dying to get out into the yard and stretch their legs. With all this rain neither one stays outside for long.
The advantage of all this rain is my grass is quite green and thick. The gardens are blooming like crazy. My bleeding hearts are already over two feet tall and covered with flowers. The daffodils and the tulips are almost finished, a shame because they were gorgeous this year. I wish they bloomed longer.
My blueberry bushes are budding. The tulip poplar and the sweet gum are beginning to show their leaves. The sweet almond is almost fully leaved and blooming, while the miniature lilacs are ready to send forth fragrant blooms. The large lilac bush will also be in bloom in the next few days. I’ll have to send some clippings with Dear Hubby when he sees his mom.
Soon I’ll be harvesting some of the rhubarb. I can’t wait to make rhubarb custard pie, one of DH’s favorites.

Yippee for lots of sun and warm weather
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Wow, two days of glorious warm weather! We had plenty of sun and temperatures in the mid seventies. I managed to plant the flowers left over from the planters on the front porch. I worked on the pond—the magnolia is dropping petals like crazy now so I’m skimming the pond every time I turn around. I would stay out in the yard all day if I could. It smells wonderful out there with the tree in full bloom.
The birds are fun to watch right now, they are arriving by the dozens to take baths in the waterfall. The robins are real clowns in the water. Each one has a unique personality and method of bathing.
The pups collapsed into a deep slumber after romping in the yard all day. Maybe it’s a good thing that tomorrow is supposed to be cloudy with possible rain. Gavin is sore after two days of tons of activity. Poor baby, it was a long winter and he spent most of it as a couch potato.
Then, didn’t we all? I know I paid for it later after I spent a few days weeding the gardens back when we had our first hint of spring weather.

Who the @#$*turned off the heat?!
Posted by doggonedmysteries
It’s darned cold outside again. Who the @#$* turned off the heat? Sure as shooting my poor magnolia tree’s blossoms will turn brown from frost tonight with the mercury dropping to twenty eight degrees. I’m glad I didn’t pack my warm jacket away.
Even the dogs are disgusted with the chill in the air. They preferred to do their romping indoors today. My couch looks as though a tornado hit it and I can’t tell you how many times I picked pillows up from the floor. Everything on the top shelf of my curio cabinet walked to one side. They both banged off the kitchen cabinet doors so much today I thought the doors would fall off. They run into the kitchen, slide, and use the cabinets to stop and turn. Yes, my house was pure bedlam today.
They dragged Dear hubby into the frenzy and I don’t know who was worse the dogs or him. My sanity walked a thin line as I tried to write and either a dog or a big ball thrown by DH bounced off my chair every few minutes. At least they all had fun. I want the warm weather back so the dogs and DH can blow off steam away from my desk.

A tangle of topics
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I finally got outside with the camera today and took some shots of the gardens and pond. I posted 3 of the best ones on our garden and pond page.
The pups and I enjoyed the gorgeous, warm day we had today. They played circus dogs and jumped through the Hula-hoop until I ran out of cookies to give them. Then they ran about until they were near collapse. I did some more cleaning out of the gardens, once again over filled, and emptied the wheel barrow four times.
Yesterday, Dear Hubby’s best friend cleaned out all the gutters on my MIL’s house while DH played gofer on the ground. This was a job that hadn’t been done in years and it took most of the day. The high winds didn’t help much. Yes, it’s a real friend, who will climb on a roof for you when the wind is gusting at 48 mph and all you can do is stand on the ground and watch. DH is fortunate to have such a good friend.
My cousin, Carol has posted a new painting on her site, Carol’s Art Blog. I am so impressed with her work. The gal has talent.

A Bulldog’s brief discussion
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I have friends who have a female Bulldog. She is in heat and to prevent a mess in the house they put a pair of men’s bikini briefs on her. They fit well and stay nicely in place with her tail sticking out—well, you know where.
The other day while the dog went out in the yard to do her business, my friend was busy talking to her next door neighbor. A while later when she was ready to go inside, she called the dog. Seems the dog was very slow to come, which for her isn’t normal. This Bulldog will run to her ‘Mommy’ like a shot when called. My friend called the dog a second time and the dog finally meandered up onto the deck. Now, a Bulldog’s facial expression is often very difficult to judge because of all the wrinkles. However, from what I heard, there was no problem telling that the look she shot her ‘Mom’ was one of utter disgust.
It seems that ‘Mommy dearest’ had forgotten to remove the briefs. The dog was not happy. Like a kid in diapers she had a full load in hers and didn’t quite know what to think about it. Once ‘Mom’ remedied the situation and the little darling got a cookie, all was forgiven.

MOM, do something... this is so NOT right!

Wild weather for the beginning of April
Posted by doggonedmysteries
We had plenty of crashing thunder, wild lightning, and monsoon-like rain today. The pups weren’t thrilled with being inside but neither were they particularly thrilled with being outside. Patty hates rain, she thinks she’ll melt or something. Gavin doesn’t mind it too much but the drenching we got, was not his idea of fun either. The rain battered the heck out of my daffodils but they might stand back up after they dry out a bit.
Tomorrow the weather people are predicting wind gusts of up to fifty miles per hour. I spent what little daylight (with no rain) we had left, battening down the hatches. I’m sure I probably missed a few things and will find them moved tomorrow. With my luck, they’ll be sleeping with the fishes in the pond and I’ll have to run a salvage operation. Is Jacques Cousteau’s son still around? Maybe I’ll give him a call.
The poor magnolia will probably lose many of its not yet opened buds if the winds get too high. I don’t remember ever having as much wind as we’ve had this year. I do hope this will be the last of the high winds or I’m going to have to take some more bungee cords out into the yard to keep things from blowing away.

Out like a lamb
Posted by doggonedmysteries
The old adage held true around here. March did come in roaring like a lion and it looks as though it will tip toe out of here like a lamb. We did get some rain yesterday and today which we needed. It was getting to the point where I thought I might have to water the gardens.
I’m happy that it was a cool and misty day because I didn’t feel as though I was missing anything by not being able to get out into yard. The rain did push some of my daffodils into opening. The gardens are looking nice even though I haven’t had time to get out there and do a major cleaning of the beds. (Geez, that sounded like another laundry day.)
I’m hoping our magnolia tree waits to bloom until there’s no danger of frost. I hate to see the blossoms get frosted and brown in one night.
Tonight the sky was clear and you could see the stars. I enjoyed the sight when I took the pups for their late night last out. The air was cool and fresh and a heavy dew had coated the lawn.
I can’t wait until it’s warm enough to sit outside at night.

A little bit of this a little bit of that…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Wow, my hits passed the 30,000 mark…Thank you dear readers.
It almost felt as though winter was tapping us on the shoulder again yesterday. Today was a bit warmer and tomorrow is supposed to be warmer yet. At least I should be able to get out to do a little yard work.
I took the pups for walks today they both enjoyed meeting and greeting some of the neighbors who happened to be out. Gavin was shyly sucking up for neck scratches and showed off his paw shaking skills for cookies. It’s a good thing I’d preloaded my pockets before we went for his walk. Then I took Patty out. Gavin will mosey along while Patty wants to keep up a fast pace, places to go, people to see, smells to smell—let’s move it, Mom. She is more on the boisterous side when it comes to meeting and greeting people. They love her enthusiasm when she does ‘stick ‘m up’ for them…or rather for the cookies. Yes, I did fill my pockets again.
Dear Hubby is so tired. I do hope they release his mother from the Rehab hospital before I leave for my writers’ conference in mid May. If not, he’ll probably have to get some help with her dog during the time I’m gone so he doesn’t have to run over there twice a day. Our two dogs can be enough of a handful for him when he’s not tired.
