Black Friday our way
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Dear Hubby and I will be staying close to home. As in, we aren’t going anywhere today. DH will sit in his lounge chair and watch TV with Patty. Gavin will snooze in his chair. Yes, Gavin has his very own chair. It’s behind my desk chair so he can be close but not trying to get on my lap while I work.
What will I do? Between running the dogs out whenever they decide that they must go. (Yes, the dogs are in charge.) It’s a perfect day to curl up with a good book—or write one.
I look forward to a full coffee pot and meals on paper plates so there are no dishes for me to do.
I spent too many years in retail to consider going anywhere near a store today. I no longer have the patience to deal with rude people, imbeciles, and screaming lunatics.
If we’re extremely lucky, the neighbor’s idiot kid won’t spend the afternoon gunning his car for hours on end and we’ll have a quiet day. They rent, we’re looking forward to the day they move. In fact, when that happens we’ll have a party to celebrate.

My latest addiction
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I’ve been trying to cut back on my coffee drinking. I used to drink herb teas quite often, but haven’t for a long time. I’ve discovered Bengal Spice tea made by Celestial Seasonings. Dang, it’s good. They have a few other flavors, I didn’t see in the store I went to, that I’m going to try to find at another store.
I still want my coffee but their teas make a nice, flavorful change especially before I go to bed. Dear Hubby likes their Sleepytime Vanilla tea and their Cinnamon Apple Spice. I do think the Sleepytime Tea has been helping him sleep better.
You should see Gavin and Patty when DH makes the Cinnamon Apple Spice they think he has something they might like to mooch. It’s his own fault for sharing his cinnamon toast with them all the time. He’ll get no sympathy from me. 🙄

Do I have a magnet in my pocket?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Ladies, when your Dear Hubby retires, pray he finds something to do. I can’t cook dinner without DH coming into the kitchen and getting under foot. He’s worse than the dogs! Five minutes earlier, when I was nowhere near the kitchen. Did he need to get into the cupboard then? Nope.
As soon as I begin to cook dinner, he needs something from the cupboard above or below where I’m working. Or, he blocks my access to the sink because he’s there fiddling with something. It’s as if I have a magnet in my back pocket.
Of course, the dogs compete with him over getting under foot, but at least I can chase them out of the kitchen and pull the baby gate across. It’s a shame the gate doesn’t work on him.
Don’t get me wrong I love DH dearly, I love the dogs too but geez, let me get dinner without having to trip over someone. Please. It’s an accident looking for a place to happen because I’ll be the first to admit it—I’m a KLUTZ!

Bad TV commercials
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Is it me or are the TV commercials getting worse? It’s bad enough when we’re assaulted by one bad erectile dysfunction medication commercial after another, but now it’s Christmas shopping commercials. Does anyone else find that blond lady on the Target commercials downright psycho? She’s enough to give you nightmares.
And don’t get me started on the mannequin with her jazz hands. Give me cute. Like the Armstrong Floor commercial with the skate boarding Bulldog. Give me snappy and witty but please don’t tell me to have a happy period. If Mother Nature ever showed up here to hand me a ‘present’, I’d slap the crap out of her.
It’s no wonder parents go broke at Christmas. Little Johnny and Janie are inundated with commercials for expensive toys they must have! Excuse me, but what child NEEDS a $30.00 cell phone? Children lose things! Heck, they lose mittens that are strung through their coat sleeves around their necks or hermetically sealed to their coat cuffs. Guaranteed you’ll be hearing about how they lost that phone within a week. You might as well go flush the money down the toilet, or go lose it at the gambling tables. It all amounts to the same thing.
There are no limits to the insanity.

How many ways can you say crazy?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Tonight a friend of mine (Jackie) and I were discussing the many ways you can say crazy. There were the old stand bys of one sandwich shy of a picnic, his elevator doesn’t go to the top (some even say it hasn’t left the ground floor), the lights are on, but nobody is home. Then she hit me with ‘her cheese has slid off her cracker’ and I fell on the floor.
It was downhill from there. We got worse. They came swiftly nuttier than a fruitcake, one step short of Bedlam, and answering the cuckoo. He’s one taco short of a combo plate, one brick short of a load, one egg roll short of a PuPu platter. His rocket is not working on all thrusters.
And worse. She’s such an air head, that the only thing that keeps things from going in one ear and out the other, is the “For Rent” sign in the middle. He is a few fries short of a happy meal. He has verbal diarrhea and mental constipation. I think her sewing machine is out of thread. Some drink from the fountain of knowledge, but he just gargled.
Have you any to add?

It’s time to accentuate the positive
Posted by doggonedmysteries
For many people this time of the year is the most depressing. I know it has been so for me for a long time. However, I am determined that THIS year I will work towards a more positive and happy attitude.
I will remember to make myself feel happier. Smile and the world smiles with you, it is true. When you wear a smile, people tend to smile back. Once they’ve smiled at you they will smile at the next person they meet and so on. Pass along a smile today. It’s uplifting and such a small thing to do.
I will listen to others. Everyone needs to talk but finding a willing ear to bend is often a problem. How was your day? I’m listening.
I will take time to play. Yes, I said play. Everyone should play. Bring out that inner child and let him/her have some fun.
Hmm, there’s still one big, fluffy pile of leaves in the yard I think it’s time I joined the dogs in a good dive in the leaves.

The Idas
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Hurricane Ida is throwing a lot of wind our way. It hasn’t rained much although it’s been overcast for days. It did begin to rain a bit around 3 a.m. though. How do I know this? Because the pups wanted to go out. Not a peep out of them all night until it began to rain.
Hurricane Ida is feisty and makes me think of another Ida I knew. She lived with us. She had white hair, wore glasses, was under five feet tall, and was almost as round as she was tall. Ida was a lively woman who loved to walk. She could walk all of us grandkids into the ground on any given day. She learned to do the twist when she was in her seventies.
Oh, that woman could bake! The cookie jar was always full and the house was scented with baked goods for as long as I can remember. My baby sister loved peanut butter cookies and she often made them for her. I loved her chocolate drop cookies, oatmeal and raisin, and Snickerdoodles. She had a true weakness for chocolate, dark chocolate being her favorite. I know she passed that obsession on to me.

For what are you thankful?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I promised Dave, that sometime this month I’d do a post on what we are thankful for, so here goes.
I’m thankful for every moment with my Dear Hubby, the love of my life, may we have many more years ahead of us. I’m thankful that I’m healthy. I’m thankful that we have a roof over our heads, our mortgage is paid, and we have food on the table. I’m thankful for the love of two silly dogs.
I’m thankful for the love and support of my wonderful Aunts and Cousins. Have I told you all lately how much I love you?
I’m thankful for all my wonderful friends who never fail to lift my spirits. I love you guys too.
I’m thankful to be able to follow my own path in life.
I’m thankful to be who I am, all I’ve experienced—the good and the bad, who touched me, who I’ve touched, and for those who have gone before me. I’m thankful for the joys of living and the lessons of loss and grief.
I’m thankful for the people who take time out of their day to read what I write here.

What foods do you crave when the seasons change?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I find my cravings change with the seasons. Right now, in the fall, I begin to crave vegetable laden soups and stews, crisp tart apples and apple cider, herb teas, pecan and pumpkin pies, and acorn squash. Dear Hubby wants slow cooked beef and pork roasts with mashed potatoes and carrots or corn. He wants apple crisp, bread pudding, and rice pudding with raisins all still warm from the oven.
My father would make a wonderful turkey soup after Thanksgiving. He’d boil down the turkey carcass, put in everything but the kitchen sink, and never wrote the darned thing down, he died in 1995. I’d almost perfected his recipe after years of trial and error when DH decided he no longer liked turkey. That was the end of that. Now I make chicken soup with a PA Dutch flair.
DH’s mother used to make one thing very well. She made an applesauce cake to die for however, she no longer bakes. No matter how often DH asks for it I won’t make her cake. Why? Because no matter how good it is, it can never compare to the memory of his mother’s.
It is fall, and I still crave Dad’s soup. DH still craves his mother’s applesauce cake. What foods do you crave when the seasons change?

Tons of leaves and two dogs
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Our yard has three trees, a large magnolia, a very tall tulip poplar, and a sweet gum tree. In the spring and summer, I love them. They shade our yard and house and keep us cool. In the fall, I’m not so fond of them. In the fall, they drop a ton of leaves.
I raked leaves today. Raked, and raked and raked them. I raked leaves until I thought my arms would fall off. I raked up enough leaves to hide several bodies in the piles if I wanted to. Each pile is waist high and at least twelve feet long.
Ah, yes the piles of leaves. If you have kids (I don’t), they are a magnet. You would think I’d have it easy without kids around. However, I have two dogs who think they are kids and—you guessed it, the leaf piles are magnets to them.
Our city will pick up the leaves if they are out on the street. I need to haul those two huge piles of leaves out there. Well, I will move them if I can keep the dogs out of them.
I raked leaves. Patty flew out the door and leapt into the nearest pile with great glee. I raked the leaves back into the pile. Gavin decided that she looked as though she was having fun so he followed suit and barreled into the other pile of leaves. I raked again. They both dashed through the first pile of leaves. I raked. With every trip outside—they played and I raked.
My work gloves didn’t prevent the blisters from appearing on my hands. I’m pooped. Tomorrow the pups will be going outside on leashes until I can move the leaves out of the yard.

Um, the check is in the mail?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
I was going to sit down and write checks for all the bills tonight. I guess I wasn’t supposed to. After I wrote out the second check and went to write the third one, I was surprised to find that I didn’t have any checks left in the book. “Okay,” I thought, “I’ll get a new book of them out.” I dug around where I keep the checks and to my chagrin I found that yes, I’d used not only my last check in the book, but I’d used my last check.
GAH! Thank heavens I could go online and order more checks. I hope the different companies I was writing checks to (okay, was going to write them to) can wait for the new checks to arrive since I can’t pay any of them online. That’ll teach them.
I’ve become so used to paying most of my bills through my bank or online I tend to forget that the city and county want their bills paid by check or cash. They are so far behind the times it’s silly.
Now if only I can remember to buy stamps….
