Silly dogs!
Posted by doggonedmysteries
In between the kitchen and the back porch we have a half-door that we can use when we want the regular door open. I had two dogs telling me to hurry up and get their food in their dishes. Gavin was almost too quick to photograph. LOL!

Who is the Alpha dog in your house?
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Ten years ago Gavin wanted the position of Alpha Dog but after a year of dealing with Mr. Determined, I knocked him out of that position. Yes, it took a full year. He was the most dominant pup I’ve ever had to deal with in my life. We locked horns on a daily basis. I celebrated when he finally got it. What a great day that was when he came to the realization I wasn’t going to let him be the boss.
The Curmudgeon sometimes thinks he is the Alpha Dog but we all know better. You can almost see the dogs roll their eyes when he tries to act the part. The ‘get a grip’ expression is priceless.
Patty hasn’t applied for the position as Alpha, she’s content to be part of the pack. Though Gavin thinks he ranks higher in the pack than she does, she and I know better. It’s fun to watch her snatch his bone away, dance around victorious, Gavin sighs, and looks at me as if to say, “Can’t you control her?”

Breaking in a new vet
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Breaking in a new veterinarian isn’t something one does every day. Our vet of over 20 years suddenly retired due to ill-health, we weren’t warned ahead of time so were a bit in shock when we tried to make an appointment for Patty with him and got the surprising news that he was no longer there.
The clinic has two new vets that we’ve never met so we had to make a quick choice. We chose the one our vet had mentored and who has two terriers, a Westie and a Cairn. Patty’s appointment was with her yesterday. We went with a great deal of concern, it’s been a long time since we’ve had a new vet.
We shouldn’t have worried. Patty liked her. Patty kept giving her kisses. That’s a huge plus. She checked Patty’s arm pit lump and decided that it was most likely a fatty tumor and we should just monitor it. If it grows larger in size, we’ll have her remove it.
Next we get to see what Gavin thinks of having a new vet. Since he does love women it might be easier on him. Knowing him, that should be a very interesting appointment. We did warn her about him and his quirks.

Don’t tell anyone but Patty likes to have her teeth brushed
Posted by doggonedmysteries
After the last vet dental bill on Gavin, and the availability of a new doggie toothpaste at the vet’s office, Gavin and Patty get their teeth brushed every night. It’s funny to watch them.
Patty is first. She ducks her head down as low as possible, making me have to bend and reach, but if you look at the other end, her tail is wagging like crazy. Once I get her jaw in my hand, lift her lips, and start brushing her tail wags even faster. However, that’s not how I know she likes it.
Gavin is next. He ducks. I catch. I brush. Done. Except that every single time Patty comes over and tries to get a lick in on his teeth.
Hehehe! She likes the beef flavored doggie toothpaste.
You all have a good one!

Yes, yes they are good guard dogs
Posted by doggonedmysteries
When these two pups decide to bark at a stranger, they sound like ten dogs vying to tear the person apart. Someone working on the upcoming election had the misfortune to find this out today.
When he knocked on the door Gavin and Patty went from snoozing in chairs waiting for Mom to wake up to ‘look at us we are vicious guard dogs’ mode in one second flat.
He made a remark about what good guard dogs they were to The Curmudgeon. To which he replied, “Yes, yes they are.”
Invited guests equal overly friendly, love you, love you smoochy dogs. Whereas uninvited guests equal “Mommy, can we snack on them?”

A walk in the park
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Yesterday, I woke early to the pain in my back. I hate beating my alarm clock up in the ‘morning’…okay, my morning. In my opinion, to beat my alarm by an hour sucks big time.
This called for coffee, anti-inflammatory drugs, and some slow moving. About an hour later, I was still sore but not horribly so. I was also up for a walk because I figured if I stopped moving I’d get stiff and it would take longer to recover from whatever I did to my back.
G never goes walking on Wednesday that’s her grocery day. Therefore it was Annie and I who were going. I asked Annie if she minded me bringing Miss Patty along. She didn’t mind a bit.
Crated Gavin and asked Patty if she wanted to go for a walk. LOL, She started bouncing off the walls she was so excited to go somewhere with Mommy.
She was surprised to be getting in the car. “I thought we was going for walkies, Mom?” She’s never gone walking at the park before.
Patty has a complex about other dogs since a pittie attacked her quite a few years ago. She does NOT like other dogs (except for her brother Gavin) and I do fear she’d attack another dog if given the slightest chance to do so.
However, she is the easier of these two dogs to handle. Gavin’s low center of gravity and heavy-duty power makes him a bit too much for me to walk when I’m injured.
This all explained to Annie had us a wise ally during the walk in the park. We only saw three dogs two of whom we did have to manage a form of warning about Patty and her attitude.
With her favorite cookies to distract her and plenty of praise for “leaving it” when she did see the other dog and go into extreme alert mode I call her first walk in the park a success.
The best part is the very tired dog who, after dinner, all she wanted was to go to bed.

Here’s your sign…
Posted by doggonedmysteries
While walking in the Rose Gardens last week I had finally remembered to pocket a few dog cookies for the various dogs that we see there. Funny, we only came across three dogs this time.
However, while talking to one dog’s owner, whose dog was not on a leash may I add, I had to bite my tongue a few times. He asked me if I had dogs. I said yes and then he asked why wasn’t I walking them in the park.
“My female isn’t good with other dogs since one attacked her. My male has started to back up her attitude. I dare not walk them where people let their dogs run loose. They are not good with other dogs.”
He replied, “Yeah, I know what you mean a couple of big dogs attacked my dog and chased him home once.”
No, people, he did NOT get it!!! Here’s your sign sir.
I hope you all have a good one!

Patty’s turn to write
Posted by doggonedmysteries
Mom said I could write today’s blog. She was too tired to think straight.
Gavin thinks I should write about food, but that’s all he ever thinks about. I want to write about all the bullies like me that someone rescues. Mom and Dad rescued me and I think that’s important.
We have many friends on Facebook that are rescues. Lil Bit and Tugg are two of them. They had a much rougher start than I did. We Bullies are made of tough stuff and more often than not we bounce back from the worst of circumstances. Those two certainly have.
I was lucky. I was what Mommy calls a dump off. Some man had imported me from Budapest Romania so he could breed Bullies. He got a boy Bullie from Oklahoma too. I didn’t like the boy Bullie much and the man decided I was too much trouble. Mom ran the Lehigh Valley Bull Terrier Club rescue at the time and he brought me to her. She says he was supposed to bring my papers and shot records and stuff but he never did come back with them.
At first I didn’t like Gavin very much, but he was nice to me except when I stole his bones. Mommy says she had planned to place me in a home but since Gavin’s Auntie Sadie died, he was lonely for another Bullie and she and Dad decided that maybe I should stay.
That was almost eight years ago and I am still happy here. I love my Mommy and Daddy and my bratty big brother Gavin.
